I'm leaving Venice for Rome later on today and from there il be heading to Florence. I really wanna check out Tuscany and Cinque Terre in depth but I dont know a good base for each. I really dont wanna be troping around with a 40 pound pack so if anyone can tell me a good place to stay around these areas it would help me out so much.

Monterosso is more of a party atmosphere at night, Vernazza is nice and quiet but I liked manarola the best. Whereever you stay there will be plenty of lodgings...don't worry. Also, as of 2 weeks ago the portion of the trail from Manarola to Corniglia was closed(but there was no sign) so I had to hike back about 40 mins.

There are very few hostels/hotels in Cinque Terra. It's not impossible to get a room at one but you may have some difficulty. My advice is to bypass that route anyway. Just go into one of the many wine shops on one of the streets (the locals make there own type of heavily fortified fruity wines) and ask the operator if he/she knows anyone with a room to rent for a night or two. The locals are super friendly and many are starving artists. Be sure and sample all the wine and do as much of the hike between towns as you have time for. I can't wait to return next September.

I stayed at an amazing place in Rio Maggiore. We booked it about an hour before arriving, but there were also people waiting at the train station, small as it was. In the end, I don't know how huge of a difference it makes which village you stay in, because they're very easy to get to by train. Have fun! I want to go back!!

Most people stayed in apartments in Monterosso. That was what we did and we had a great time. Upon arriving at the train station, there are usually people there asking if you need a room. Also look for other backpackers, chances are they will be in the same boat as you and the more people per apartment, the cheaper it is!!!!!!!

Have fun in Cinque Terre, it rocked my world!!!!
