Hey all, its been a while since ive visited the boards, but I got the travel bug again and I am off to Europe in June!

I am going to Milan, Lyon, and Alicante, and am having a tough time with my in-between travel.

How the heck can I get from Lyon to Alicante? I cant seem to find a definitive train or plane route. I am traveling from Lyon to Alicante on June 9... Does anyone have any suggestions/links for cheap train or airfare?

Thanks in advance guys, you're by far the best resource for this kind of stuff!

OKAY ONLY PROBLEM W/my idea is that the rail leave after the flight, so you would have to travel to geneva on the 8th....but anything direct is CRAZY expensive....i'll keep looking though

If you take a train, I am nearly positive you will have to go through Barcelona.

okay if you want to go only on the rail it may not be the cheapest but

leave Lyon for perpignan on the 8th 76usd ticket, and their are 4 differant times that particular train leaves so you could take the lastest one and arrive in Perpignan, than the next morning, the 9th, board the only train to Alicante wich leaves at 8:55am and arrives at 5:24pm the cost of that train is 78usd or 11usd for a passholder.

that is just one option , and it may not be the cheapest.

good luck and have fun.

There's really only one train route from France into the southern coast of Spain.

You'll probably need to take the TGV (high-speed train) from Lyon to Marseilles, and then from there to Montpellier. There is a train that goes directly from Montpellier to Barcelona, and you'll have to change there to one that goes to Alicante. That's probably the best train route. I doubt that flying will be much easier.

If you're going to be there for less than two months, I'd recommend the Eurail Selectpass. If you're under 26 you qualify for the youth. For the three countries you listed you could get a pass for 241-367 USD (depending on how many days you want to travel). Then you don't have to worry about the cost of train hopping etc from place to place and they can hook you up going from city to city. Then, you could travel around the countries for "in between time" without spending a whole lot on transportation. You could even hop off at some small strange city.

Anyhow, that's just me. Good luck.

Cancel that everyone, I just spoke the person I was meeting in Lyon, and he has informed me that he will also be meeting me in Alicante.

So that means I have 4-5 days to kill in between Milan and Alicante!

Geneva def looks like a possibility, although its expensive as hell... Has anyone been there before and could recommend some lodging? Im not too keen on the hostel thing, I prefer hotel rooms (even if they are no-frills)

Will anyone be in the area around that time? I had a great time meeting up with people last trip, would love to do it again!

Elipsos(http://www.elipsos.com) has a direct overnight train from Milan to Barcelona, from there you can take the Euromed high speed train to Alicante. Elipsos also has a direct overnight train from Geneva to Barcelona, and then connect on the Euromed also. You can also get on it from Perpignan, which you can take the TGV to from Lyon.

Option 1: Milan--(Elipsos)--Barcelona--(Euromed)--Alicante
Option 2: Lyon--(TGV)--Geneva--(Elipsos)--Barcelona--(Euromed)--Alicante
Option 3: Lyon--(TGV)--Perpignan--(Elipsos)--Barcelona--(Euromed)--Alicante

If you still plan on going to Lyon the the third option is the shortest one.

Also, it's a little hard to find, so here's the proce list for Elipsos

http://www.elipsos.com/servlet/OTN200061El...r?code=1&lang=3

1. Press "Fares" on the bottem menu thing.
2. Choose a EUROPEAN country, any country, doesn't matter, it will only let you buy tickets in Europe, but you can buy them online anyways, it's weird...
3. Just click the 2 city pairs you want to travel between on the map.

Good luck!
