Just got back from a week in Greece. Athens, in my opinion, is a big, dirty, ugly city - probably two or three days max would do there. We spent four days in the pelopennese - there's lots to see there, not just Sparta. We stayed in Nafplio, very pretty and central, easy bus connections to Argos, Epidavros, Arcocorinth and lots of other places. Depending on how much you want to squeeze in in any given day, you could easily fill more than a week just on the peninsula (it's an island now), but four or five days would probably give you a good sense of the region. Lonely Planet has a Pelop. only guidebook - check it out of the library and figure out how much you want to do there and reckon a few more weeks for the rest of the country. I'd have loved to have more time in country, but life interferes with travel, sometimes...
