Hey all (new memeber here :-) !!), I'm going to be checking into Rome Ciampino at 2345 a week on Saturday and will need to get to Pompeii as soon as possible.

Does anyone know how to do this- bus/train?..and will I be able to leave straight away or have to wait until the morning?

If I have to stay in Rome for the night where's a good/cheap hostel to stay, prefferably near the airport.

Cheers!!!

Jimbo,

The beauty of Rome is it transit system. It is one of the easiest to use and can get you every where. Ok here is what you need to do to get to Pompeii from Rome. First stop by a tobacco store and pick up the transit maps they are dirt cheap. Then take the bus to the Termeni...sorry forgot the spelling it is the train station. Once you hit the train station there are trains that run right to pompeii like every couple of hours. The trip is not to long and the view is amazing from the train. Some advice though, Pompeii is cool but do not expect to see to much a lot of it has been moved to protect the art and other things found. It is still quite a sight to see but a true to the word tourist trap!!!

Hope this helps...If you get lost email me direct and I can guide you out of almost any hole there.

Mikie

It's been a few years since I was at Pompeii, but I took the Circumvesuvia local train line from Sorrento (where I was staying) to Pompeii for a day trip. You can also take it to Herculanaeum (Ercolano in Italian), which is every bit as cool as Pompeii. Rather than volcanic ash, it was coverd by volcanic mud which hardened into rock, preserving the site.

I took a fast train from Rome to Naples, then switched to the Circumvesuvia to get to Sorrento. I didn't want to deal with the size, noise and crowds of big city Naples...
