Hey, Im an American livin in Italy for the last 4 months. My Mom's coming out in like, 4 days, and Im not quite sure what to do with her, cause Im used to the cheap as possible, kamikaze crazy no plan kind of traveling and I dont think shed be down with that. Anybody got any good hostels to recommend, (quiet, semi-cheap, with possibility of private rooms) in Rome, Venice, and Napoli? Also has anybody been to the other town, like Pompeii, next to Vesuvius, but its not called pompeii, cant remember the name. My Mom wants to go there and I know nothing about it. Id appreciate any advice! I only have access to this computer for today and tomorrow!
Also if anybody has questions about crazy travel in Italy go ahead and ask me.
Thanks ciao and baci da italia

The town is called Herculanaeum, or Ercolano in modern day Italian. You can get to it from the Circumvesuvia, the local commuter train that runs from Napoli to Sorrento. I highly recommend it.

I would also take her for a drive along the Costa Amalfatano (Amalfi Coast) to see the gorgeous scenery. That is free, and may (at most) run you a one day rental car. It sounds like she likes Ancient ruins, so I also suggest a visit to the Greek temples at Paestum, south of Salerno. And yes, I said "Greek"...as Greek culture had a huge influence on southern Italy -- many towns began on the peninsula began as Greek colonies.

That's a few for starters, but unfortunately I don't have hostel or hotel recommendations. If she's going to split the cost of a hotel room with you, then it won't be that expensive, hopefully. I usually go with three star hotels -- they are the cheapest version that have their own toilet in shower in the room.

Feel free to ask any other questions! Oh, and you ought to get our Tpunkers who are visiting Italy this summer to stop by and have una birra with you!
