So, I have two different plans for this autumn, depending on my admittance into a UK uni. If I'm not in, I'm going to apply to a few different universities for January and spend the autumn travelling the UK, armed with a few dollars I've saved and a BUNAC temporary work visa.
My question is this - is it possible to see northern Scotland properly in the late autumn? I'd probably get there around late October/early November. Will it be unbelieveably cold? Will it be possible to do some hiking? Or will everything be closed up? I've never been further north than Edinburgh, so I'm a little hazy about the weather patterns in the north. Anybody been up there at that time of year?

I'm waiting to hear from Exeter. I may also apply to Warwick and/or Sussex.
Rain I can handle. But will things be open?

It'll definitely be off season, but I don't think too much will be closed. Scotland is Scotland, weather wise, though. You'll see a postcard when you're there of a cartoon sheep getting rained on that says, "Summer in Scotland." Beneath it is the same cartoon with the caption, "Winter in Scotland."
I think you'll be fine. Pack some wool clothes which will still keep you warm while wet. It could be nice, though, especially in October.
The heather blooms in Autumn, too, so if you're lucky, you might see hillsides covered in purple when you arrive...

ah yeah, that would be a very cool sight to see as well wwm! Scotland will definetly be cold when your going, but just pack tons of warm clothes like the others have said and you'll be fine.
Some tourist places will be closed, but you'll get that wherever you go in the uk. Most places will be open though.

Oddly enough, I'm kind of looking forward to the cold. It's romantic in a way, isn't it? All bundled up in sweaters and a hat, trudging across the highlands...
Of course, living in New Orleans may have blurred my memories of how cold weather feels...

It's veeeeery crowded. Like, so crowded you can't even walk down certain streets. It can be fun, but if you really want to see the city, come in the late spring or autumn.

I loved new orleans. I went about 10 years ago, and it was busy then too. Really cool place though!
