Default how much should i plan??

So i've been saving for a year or so long trip, and while saving, i discovered some cheapass plane tickets (SFO to London round trip with insurence for less than $600!!!!) so i bought them. i'll be in london on may 24th, and leaving there one july 1st. over a month abroad!! yay!

i'm wondering how much i should plan. i want to book a hostel for the first few days, but i don't want to plan too much so i can have some freedom. is this realistic? is it dangerous to not plan where i'm going to be every night?

i will definitely purchase some rail passes, brit rail and maybe the luxembourg/holland/belgium eurail pass (i must see amsterdam!)

any advice would be fantastic

Don't plan too far ahead....you'll just want to change your mind once you've met some people, maybe heard what other people have been doing.

I usually only book a few days ahead. This can bite you in the ass when things are full, so if there's something you really want to do plan for it. But don't sweat the details is my general advice!

Although I'm not sure how hard it is to find a bed in western europe during summer. I'm sure someone else can comment.

I found myself booking hostels around 2-3 days ahead of time during the busiest part of the season in '07.

If I were you I'd book your hostel way ahead of time for Amsterdam because firstly you know that you definitely want to go and secondly there are plenty of bad hostels in A'dam and getting one without much atmosphere can take some of the fun out of it.
