Travelling UK and Ireland
 

Gday all, what's the best way to travel the UK and Ireland for a month? I've heard that trains are good but buses are cheap. Is a Britrail pass really worth it or are occassional single point to point passes (talking train here) good enough?

Any advice, good or bad, is welcome!

Trains in Ireland are useless. Your paying twice the price to arrive 30 minutes earlier (typical trip Galway to Dublin). It is more comfortable you have a table, bathroom and shop onboard but at €40 it's not really worth it. The bus takes 3 and a half hours so it's not really that bad. Bus in Ireland is the only way to go, Ireland's tiny so your never going to be on it that long. Unlike the rest of Europe Ireland's a car nation with little or no interest in developing public transport.

The UK has a much better Rail network I've only ever used the trains around Birmingham but found them excellent. We always hear the Brits complaining about their rail service but it's not that bad at all. Bus is probably still the best way to go though price wise. The UK has a top class motorway network with some of the safest roads in the world. It can get extremely congested at times though so make sure you don't travel during peak times.

I used Mega Bus a few times in the UK. You can get fares as cheap as one quid if you book ahead.

In Ireland deffinitely go by bus. I used my student card (ISIC) and got really good discounts!!
