Camping solo in Wales/England

I'm trying to find cheap places to stay in Wales and so far it seems most of the budget places are camp sites. I'm not a huge camper, but I do enjoy it from time to time. If it's going to save me some money than I'm all for it. However, I'm not sure how I feel about camping by myself. Do you think its safe for a single chick to be sleeping outside alone? It seems like most of the campsites are similar to KOA sites, cheesy family spots. But if I'm going to be lugging around a tent for three weeks then I definitely want to do at least one or two nights of more rugged camping. Still, the fear of axe murderers and bears haunts me, no matter how unlikely those events may be...

If they're KOA/family type campsites I can't imagine it is particularly unsafe. I mean hostels are usually pretty wide open so I don't see camping as any better/worse than that. Carry some pepper spray if you're really worried (I'm assuming that's legal in the UK?)
