I'm really sorry, I've been to that area of Spain about a million times on family holidays, yet never really payed any attention to the airport or what was going on around me! Suffice to say that we weren't staying in hostels or anything!
There was a TV programme on here in the UK recently called "Marbella Belles", it was about British women who have moved to Marbella to live the high life. Basically, they were a bunch of middle aged women, who somehow had more money than sense, and it was so funny. They swan around in their fancy cars, and go and get their nails done every 5 minutes. Look out for the women like that, you're bound to have some fun!

Malaga airport: Small but very modern and easy to go through.
Marbella: Not much like Spain. More like a sunny, palm-tree filled UK or Germany, since you'll mostly see/hear English and German here. But it's a good base of operations to get around Andalucía. My friends and I rented a car and used it as a hub to hit Ronda, Sevilla, Granada, Gibraltar, Morocco... and then some.
Gibraltar Airport: More like a tiny airstrip that runs across the border between Spain and Gibraltar. You actually walk *across* the runway to get to/from Spain.
I've got all sorts of deets in my travel blog.. Here's a direct link to that month:

I just did a day trip to Nerja. The beach was great and it was a cute little beach town, but I would get too antzy there for a few days unless you are just looking for a little R and R. I have heard great things about Malaga though.
Also, this might be too far north for you but I absolutely LOVED Granada. If you have a chance GO THERE! Oh and stay in the Oasis hostel (I think Brookers will vouch as well).
