hey! First off, welcome to the boards!! Secondly, you should probably check out these 2 forums for ideas of what you might need. You're not going for too long so some will probably be irrelevent but I found them handy when I back-packed europe last year. (You know, for the things you'd never think of bringing like baby wipes). Anyways good luck! Let us know if you have any more specfic questions & feel free to peruse the boards. We have a lot of great information of here! (Of course, I know sometimes it can get a bit overwhelming)

If you just check out the hostel sites either from here on travelpunk or hostelworld.com, you will be able to jusdge your expenses. As far as trains go, they are relatively inexpensive, and shouldn't even factor into your budget, unless you plan on leaving Italy or are taking a really long train say from Rome to Venice. This is a website for Italian trains http://www.italiarail.com/tickets/IR/IR.asp?AFF=TRE

Ialy can be fairly cheap if you stick down the south. I usually go to Milan and Bergamo but you dont really have hostels in the North its usually hotels which can be a bit pricey. Saying that i would definately recommend the North as there are lots of pretty little villages and towns surrounding the big cities.
