3 weeks eh... not a lot of time, but I think you could spend more time in cities like Paris at Madrid. I think 2 days do not do them justice... 3 days minimum, I think.
It seems hectic, but if you can pull it off you can see a lot!
I think travel time will also eat out of your schedule... those one day cities might go by in a blur... I would suggest slowing it down a lil bit.
And perhaps including Amsterdam...

I agree with CB. You need to give more than one day for a city! That's all though

I dont know...some cities I got to know pretty damn fast. I saw all the main attractions in madrid in one day...and pretty much got a good vibe for the city within that day...and got sick of the city pretty fast (yet I was still there for 5 days...) That said, I think you should stay in madrid a little longer just so that you can use it as a hub and see all of the amazing smaller towns nearby which require pretty much a full day such as toledo and segovia.
Also, I definitely think that you should use your "extra" space to allot more days to some of the later places on your itinerary such as Prague (amazing city~ you should try to check out some of the smaller czech towns nearby, I havent been but I hear they are so much more worthwhile and cheaper than prague itself) or salzburg? And cinque terre is a lot of backpacker's favourite place... But I do think that some of your cities need more time. Mainly madrid & prague (well, czech really). Good luck!

I agree, I'm a big fan of "hub" traveling. I usually technically "stay" in one city for a long time (sometimes the duration of my trip), but I do a lot of local traveling by bus and train while I'm there.

Sounds fun! I'm with the crowd though, you need more time to do Madrid in my opinion... and more for Valencia, but I'm just partial to Spain, myself.

I considered Torino and Venice within striking distance of my Florence hub :D
Kidding...well sort of. I like to spend 3 days minimum in a city even if that means using it for daytrips.
Has your friend also been to Rome? If not, don't short change him with two days. I would also probably add an extra day to Paris unless you plan to add a couple before you fly back. The first day I am always groggy so I don't think I would be in prime shape for taking as much in.

I appreciate the input. Actually I am going for 4 weeks, slight typo. I think I will definitely end up spending 3 days in Prague. I know it is hectic but I will be traveling with another backpacker who has done it before. Who needs sleep anyways?
