Dublin...tips anyone?

A week to go and off to a short visit to Dublin by myself - going to see Tenacious D in concert and some good ole Irish ambience.....yay! Staying at Ashfield house hostel, and will have to see at least a bit of the museums and browse for cheap 2nd hand books.

Anyone got any tips on where to buy cheapest food, internet cafes or just good old fashion tips on how to spend my short time there on? I can tell there's a few good and cheap trips out of Dublin.....- might only have time for one - which ones are worth taking ?Any tips whatsoever will be appreciated as usual and know i'm asking you guys late (exam busy yikes)

Oh, and aren't any Tpunks going to see The D there too? Could use some gig companions

Must do: Dublin Literary Pub Crawl.

Also good: Backpackers Pub Crawl (cheap!)

Cheap food: Hard to find.. the sandwich counter at the local SPAR/7-11 type chain is actually pretty good, and you can come out with a custom-made sandwich and a drink for 3 euro. Otherwise, food is pricey! Best to shop and self-cater, though you'll find Irish produce selection to be rather paltry compared to the rest of the EU. There are some cheap-ish fast food places around Grafton Street, but who wants to eat fast food?

The Guinness brewery tour isn't bad, although if you're not into the black stuff, it's probably not worthwhile.

Spend a little time walking around and admiring the statues in St. Stephen's Green. It's very relaxing and peaceful.

Guiness is something I touch mainly on St. Paddy's Day when I've had a good, solid meal...it's good but not too often, buuuuuurpexcuseme.

I know, no desire for fast food, hoping I'll find some good cheap cafés around Grafton Street too. And clothes...and 2nd hand Terry Pratchett volumes...and, oh who am I kidding ;this is EU and Pricey Town

I don't suggest a wek in Dublin. That was far too long for me. Ashfield house was nice, I met some people who stayed there. I did the backpackers crawl and got thouroughly hammered because of all the free shots and all the nice people who bought me beer. haha. Grafton Street was really expensive. Try the cafe Naked. I've only seen them in Ireland and they're sooo good. (So good it's orgasmic is actually their saying) The castle wasn't really worth it in my opinion, but do check out the library and some of the free museums.

looks both ways before stepping off the curb i watched several backpackers get hit by cars. take one day to take a train south to some of the smaller towns, bray is ok, but it was like small towns back home to me. the largest mall in ireland is somewhere south of dublin, I caught the bus there from enniskerry headed to loch dun droma . it is nice to just walk around and look at the locals there

oh and visit the royal hiberinian art insitute it is free and awesome

yeah, I'm only there for 3 nights before a concert - a week would be too long. Thanks for great tips Glitterhairdye and I will try Naked for sure...

The GPO is in the middle of O'Connell st, but most people don't notice that it's still riddled in bullet holes from the 1916 rising.

St Valentine has a tomb in Dublin, it's supposed to be pretty cool looking made totally out of gold. I don't know where it is but there is a valentine st somewhere.

Phoenix park is the largest city park in Europe from what I've been told, the US embassy and Irish presidents house are in there.

For the real Irish experience forget guiness, drink Bulmers original cider, in a pint glass half full of ice. Tis rocket fuel so it is. You'll have a great night that you'll never.. em, remember.

Ok so I never found the time or ppl to go pubcrawling with so never got to try Bulmers with ice, sounds yummy though...

Tenacious D was ROCKING!!! The support act was brilliantly enacted...ppl got so angry. Fantastic concert and I can't see how I am ever going to be standing in a huge crowd singing the words to Fuck Her Gently again - what are the chances... Long live the D

Dublin has to be visited more - charming as hell and very alive - didn't want to leave...

But what's with the traumatized bus drivers???

It's just part of their training. They are dangerous though I remember they scared the shit out of me coming back from a concert, cars and people had to move out of the way quick or get run over.

Don't do the jameson tour. Waste of money. The Guinness tour was worth it though if only to drink at the bar on the top floor. 360 view of dublin.

I agree the Gravity bar offers a great view of Dublin, a pint of Guinness and you even get a souvenir with a drop of concentrated Guinness in a piece of plastic. I think the cost of admission was 10 Euros with my student discount but I can't really remember. I would say it is worth doing even if Guinness isn't your thing.
