So it looks like I'm going to be in Amsterdam for about a week at the end of August. I've been thinking about this, and I don't think I've seen it asked here so....I'm asking:

I assume you are expected to buy "goods" at the coffee shop you've chosen to hang out at...what is the stance on going in there and just chilling and/or using pot you've brought on your own?

I've read stories here where people talk about buying 5 grams for x amount of money etc etc. You obviously don't smoke 5 grams in one sitting, and you're not supposed to smoke outside the shops, so then does that mean its cool just to roll up into a shop and start smoking? Would it be considered cool if I just bought a beverage and used my own weed?

I really don't want to offend the staff or seem like another annoying American tourist when I'm there, so I'm mostly concerned about the proper etiquette in these places.

Also, while I'm on the coffee shop topic...

Is it generally cheaper to buy several grams at once than one gram at a time? I suppose if I'm just buying grams at each shop I won't need to worry about the questions above...but it seems like that would get expensive. Then again I'll probably want to try several different strains, so maybe a gram at a time is best.

Any opinions? Is it better to buy in "bulk" or small amounts?

One last question...I doubt this matters...but is it better to bring your own kit (papers, filters, tobacco) to the shops, or is it just as cheap to buy a kit there?

When you buy herb theyll give u a few big ass papers and filters but not tobacco. If you want to samplea bunch of kinds just buy it like one gram at a time. Most places only sell like 2-4 grams at a time. I have only been once and didnt buy much smoke cuz my girl doesnt smoke, however when i was smoking in shops that i didnt buy reef in I would always buy a coffee and so would she. Coffee and herb go so fucking well together cuz then u dont get all tired. And they didnt seem to mind when i did that cuz i was smoking with the owner and he was commenting on how good my bud was. K2 son...K2...as well as some AK47

I don't think the prices are any different whether you buy one gram or five.

Also, don't worry about the rules saying you can only smoke in your coffee shop. While technically not condoned, you can blaze pretty much anywhere, though not in public areas where there are kids or churchgoers. You can even light up in some bars - just be sure to ask the bartender if it's OK or see if anyone else is doing it first. It's more a matter of etiquette than law.

I have heard, since I haven't been, that the 5 grammer is generally sold prewrapped, as in a tulip kind of configuration.

They might sell it regularly single as well, but a tulip just looks so damn cool. Trust me, they are effective too hehe.

You can smoke stuff that you didn't buy in that particular shop as long as you buy a drink it is a coffieshop after all. Last time I was there I went a bit mad and bought at least a grame in each shop. At one stage I'd about 6gs of weed and 4gs of Hash, I was to paranoid to fly it home and I wasn't about to leave it there so I had to smoke the lot the evening and morning before I flew back. Ran out an hour or two before the flight and started stuffing my face with brownies before getting on the plane. Man I miss Amsterdam.

All the shops have skins and a tabaco mix but they've been left out for a while buy your own pack of skins just so you have them handy.

Buy small amounts I don't think they do bulk discounts and you'll probably want to try out loads of different types.

And try the vapourisers!!

Ok sweet.

1 gram at a time sounds ok then, I'll get to try a bunch of strains that way. I've never seen K2 where I'm from, Sleep, so I'll take your advice and try it if I see it.

Omisan - that's cool you can smoke in some bars as well...like you said, I'm mostly concerned with etiquette and not the legal issues. I know how to be careful smoking in public from living in the States, but I don't know much about offending the Dutch

MeTurk - having a bunch of weed at the end of the week is one of those "good" problems to have. I can picture myself in a similar situation. After I leave the Dam I am meeting my parents in Germany to drive around with them for like 12 days...which means no smoking! So I'm sure I'll be pounding some space cakes the last day to tide me over

My girl and I spent a decent amount of time kicking it with some of the Surinamese there. If you see blacks there is a good chance they are from Surinam and everyone Surinamese i met was kool as fuck. But any bar that we were in with them it seemed kool to smoke? TIP most people i met from surinam just like hash no ganj. Damn Surinamese is a fucking mouthful right?

Yeah I hope I meet some cool people to chill with there, I'm arriving on my own. I'm sure there will be a bunch of kids at whatever hostel I end up at (side note: not sure if it's a bad idea, but I don't think I'm going to book a hostel in advance. Bob's said they save most of their beds for walkins, so they already had only a little availability on the week I was trying to book)

But yeah, I actually don't think I've smoked hash before, I'm not even really sure what it looks like. I say "thnk" because one time in the states I got some "keef hash" but I think it was different from "regular" hash...it came on a solid disc and to smoke it you took a key or something and scraped the disc so some powder came off...anyway I am interestedin trying some hash, but I'm not really sure what to expect.

TheWills - thanks for the advice...and I will try to find BABAS and check it out

It's all so cheap there, not that I'm not price-conscious, but the cost of your bud will be nothing compared to everything else, regardless of the portions that you buy. I wouldn't worry about that, buy small amounts and sample it all. Although after that first one, how can you really get a good testing of the others?

I found that most of the weed there is incredibly strong, which of course we all think is great, and it is. But its so strong that you just can't smoke all that much. Most folks roll it with tobacco because of this. I've found that the hash isn't a whole lot different than the weed, its just more potent. But I'd rather enjoy puffing more than getting higher quicker. But honestly, although I've been there and smoked numerous times, I never set out to really try it all or get a good feel for that whole scene. I had to limit myself due to . . . uhhh . . . testing.

I would reserve a hostel. I've been there three times and the first two times tried to get a place once we got there. Bad idea, both times, stayed at some nasty rundown hostel because it's all they had. I stayed at the Bulldog the 3rd time, nice place, not social enough though but maybe I was in the wrong frame of mind since I wasn't high like everyone else.

I actually made a spur of the moment trip to Amsterdam last weekend with some of my buddies at work. It was a nice preview for later this month when I'm there for a week.

I was able to stop at several coffee shops, and I bought 2 different grams. They were only about €8 each, so yeah...hardly the most expensive thing in Amsterdam.

I only had one minor breach of etiquette: At the first shop I went to I bought a bottle of coke and drank about half of it before my buddies wanted to leave. It was one of the old-fashioned glass bottles, so I actually did think twice, but I went ahead and walked out the door with it. Some Jamaican guy there had to run out after me and tell me I wasn't allowed to take drinks outside, so we had to go back in and everyone was kind of staring at me...no worries though. And the Jamaican guy was pretty cool, and very friendly about it.

This was at my favorite of all the shops I went to (Dampkring), but I was to embarrassed to go back last weekend...I'll be back in a few weeks though!

I'm pretty sure everyone would have been too baked to care about a guy stealing a bottle.

Good luck for your next trip
