Why wasn't I born in Europe ?
Wish you a wonderful time, but don't judge the country based on Bucharest. Romania is amazing; Bucharest not that much... One week in the city is a lot, so if you feel like it, take the train to Transylvania (Sibiu, Brasov or Sighisoara). And if you can stay the night over in Transylvania, don't go to hotels, but instead stay with locals for the "real Romania" experience.
Have fun !

Have fun! I agree about getting out to neighboring areas. I thought Bucharest was cool, but I probably wouldn't have wanted to stay there too long. If you haven't booked something already in Bucharest, check out the "Midland Youth Hostel." The guy who runs it has traveled all over, and he usually takes everyone out or parties at the hostel at night. It's a smaller place, really laid-back atmosphere- like you're staying at a friend's flat or something.

Lucky!
Man, I still need to get an EU passport/residency and take advantage of those cheap-o flights more than a couple times a year.

I'd like to reiterate that Bucherest isn't the best place in Romania. But I'm sure you will have a good time even if you stay there the whole week. I would recommend seeing Transylvania is you have time. It's amazingly beautiful and Romanian people are great. My one piece of advice is do not take a taxi in Bucherest, no matter what. NO MATTER WHAT! (Yes I had a bad experience). Have fun.

You should jump the train out to Transylvania. Maybe stay in Sighasoara or Brasov. Both are worth a couple of days. I heard renting a bike and checking out the surrounding villages of Sighasoara is wonderful!!!
In Sighasoara, you could stay at: Gia Hostel, or Nathans Villa Hostel. In Brasov, you could stay at: Kismet Pao (heard GREAT things), Rolling Stone Hostel, or Postavarul Hotel. All of the places have a good rep. And if you want to be different, just walk into town, and ask around for a room. You'll get it quick and be living in a Romanians home!
