So with it being Anzac Day and all, I went to the dawn service and I was thinking about the tradition and everything and realised I wont be in Australia for Anzac day next year (europe woohoo!) so I was wondering if Anzac day services are held anywhere in europe and thought of the possibility of actually going to Gallipoli.. I know there would be like a million people there but it's something I would like to do at some point in my life... I have a brochure for a few tours in turkey that include Anzac Cove but all the short, cheap ones that I want to do aren't available on Anzac day and you have to do a whole week long 'anzac journey' thing that costs way too much for my budget. Has anyone ever been to gallipoli? I think it would be a cool thing to do but wondering whether its worth the effort

(btw, I guess this question is mainly for aussies, I understand a lot of people probably dont know what I'm on about)

There's an Anzac Dawn Service at North Beach in Gallipoli...

I lived in London last Anzac day, and there were plenty of festivities. I believe there was a service in Trafalgar Square, and there were several large celebration service type things my friends went to. And the Anzac Day ball. Check out TNT magazine if you're there around that time. I would guess that most major cities would have something after a bit of digging. You aussies are all over europe and so wonderfully patriotic. I love it.
As for being in Turkey, I understand that its quite a big thing and kind of pisses off the locals because you people drink so damn much. hehe.

My boyfriend went to the cove a few years back and was quite moved. It wasnt on anzac day (perhaps, given the crowds it was more meaningful) but it meant a lot to him to visit the site. I guess it would be the same for me to visit normandy.. I say check it out.

Going to Gallipoli for the Dawn Service is very very high up on my to-do list. I've had a few mates go, some last year, some this year, and they all have very positive things to say about it. I've been to the local dawn service the last few years now, but to actually be in Gallipoli for it would be excellent and very moving i think, i'm not the crying type but i think i would struggle to choke back a tear or two if i was there.

yeah, thats what I was thinking.. I mean i could always go to gallipoli sometime in the year when there's less people and I'm sure it would still be moving and everything, but gallipoli on anzac day is one of those 'life's to do list' things and this is a good opportunity to do it... i think I'd need to find another aussie buddy to go with though, but as long as anzac day happens in the uni holidays again next year that shouldnt be too hard

... I know i'm a bit late and all in this converstion but I went and did the whole ANZAC Day thing @ Gallipoli last year for the 90th aniversary and although there were heaps of people (between 10-15 thousand - I heard) ... it has to be one of the most moving things i've down in my life ... no BS ... i've done a few dawn services before but this is nothing to doing it there though .... its a spooky and haunting experience. And much like LostFarmboy i'm also not the crying type but it does bring a tear to your eye.

Just a word of warning though: its a hard and tough 24-36hrs, we arrived like the day before @ 2pm and camped out to get a good spot, 10 of us abandoned our tour (mutiny) to get a good spot, we packed plenty of food, sleeping bags, water, etc. and you don't get much sleep over night and then after the dawn service you hike about 5km+ up the hills to Lone Pine for the AUS service ... our bus picked us up about 4-5pm (there was like 300buses or something stupid).

Good memories and laughs ... would love to visit again when not so busy to get another side of it though. I did it with Kumaka (their 1st yr running it was a bit messy), but cheap tours with Fanatics (www.thefanatics.com/) put on a tour (we sat behind them and had some good laughs), so does Fez Tours (mixed reports).

Hope this heaps .. check out some photos here
