Vesta Hostel in Prague, the closest Hostel near the train station...

This Hostel shows promise, it does, but these are why I considered it the least pleasent of my trip:

1) No shower curtains, this counts big since it takes little money or effort to buy and hang a peice of plastic.

2) the smell, though like all smells you get used to it, was bad hard to describe.

3) no common room or kitchen...they have some chairs near the receptionists desk for what it is worth.

4) stringent rules

5) unhelpful staff.

6) no place to eat. You have a table in the room to eat in, but it is tough to eat when people are sleeping. So I ate out in the hall

7) Nobody near my age, I only saw old guys.

It will do in a pinch, but there is so much better locations to stay.

Just so you know what you are getting.

Hi, I'm going to Prague in a few weeks. Did you stay in any good hostels you could recommend and another would be what was the most interesting thing you saw there. Any good bars or restaurants? I'm going there with a group of students but we'll have some free time. Thanks!

As for good hostels, there are quite a few. I left Vesta to go to another hostel recomended by another traveller called "the Clown and Bard" which was not bad and about 50 Kc cheaper. Of course that price was for the big dorm room with over 32 places for people to sleep. I was surpirised to see people sleeping in the rafters after waking up there. the staff is generally helpful but it is crowded and they have no lockers in the room.

I also heard very good things about Sir Tobey's, it is near a lot of public transportation. I am sure a couple members here would atest to the quality of this place, though I am sure it is more expensive (why I diddn't go there). Also Hostel Elf seemd nice.

But these are only the ones I have heard of or personally experienced. There are many others out there. I passed several signs for hostels but did not enter.

As for sights and bars... there are very easy to find. Go exploring or go with other people- there is no lack of places to drink (I didn't go out in Prague for the drinking, honestly). There is also a club advertized as the largest in Middle Europe (I think, my memory is awful) with five dance floors next to Charles bridge, amongst others (I am not sure right now ). As for the sights, there is the old town, Prague castle (with a large gothic cathedral, Charles bridge, and well...I just walked everywhere, there are many sections of Prague worth a walk.

And so you will be prepared, I found the prostitutes to be the most aggresive there, so be prepared to walk fast and use your elbows!

I stayed at two hostels in Prague. The first time through I stayed at Sir Tobey's. I liked it- non-crowded rooms, very nice staff- but it wasn't until I stayed at the Traveller's Hostel near Old Town Square that I realized that in Prague it is worth it to STAY CENTRAL.

There are four seperate Traveller's Hostels and, for the life of me, I cannot remember the name of the street mine was on. The drawbacks? no common room, the dining room is only open for breakfast, and the diction on the signs asking you to not use too much toilet paper is questionable. --ha ha. but really, these things did not bother me a bit! The staff was great. You can buy absinthe and beer at reception 24/7. The balcony became the big hang-out spot.

Also, as a girl travelling solo I felt much more comfortable not having to commute in and out of the town center late at night, as was required when staying at Sir Tobey's.

when I went to prague I stayed a hostel named atlas, it was pretty good, not packed at all, and the staff was very helpfull, and it was only 12 euros to stay there a night. Location is good, its like 10 minute walk from strain station.

As for bars I would go to local bars, out of the center of the city, it was very cheap, and you get to meet some locals, and that was very interesting.

I stayed in sir tobys the first time i went to prague (feb 04). It was a really nice place and the staff were very cool. Very nice rooms and the down stairs kitchen was a great place to meet people. The only thing was I got the impression coming back late from nights out was kind of frowned upon here though. So i wouldnt reconmend it to anyone wanting to go out at night alot - definatley not a "party hostel".
