I read a short article about this place, and am itching to go. It's off the coast of Nicaragua and apparently pretty remote. The island is basically untouched, gorgeous beaches and really laid back atmosphere... I was thinking of taking some diving lessons there, they are decently priced and the diving is supposed to be spectacular. Not much development, just somewhere to really relax and get away from EVERYTHING... The Bar apparently has a sign - "No Dancing on the Tables with your Clothes On"... Sounds like a GREAT place.

Has anyone heard about this place at all? I looked it up online, but havent found much that I didnt get from the article... And does anyone know whether its better to hit the caribbean in december/janurary-ish or more for spring break??

Alright, that's it - I'm going! A coworker of mine is an avid diver and has been all over the world. I'll ask him if he knows anything about it...

Well, you have to fly into Managua, the capital and find your way to Bluefields on the other side of the country. Which isnt too far. Lonely Planet calls the overland trip the "ultimate backpack experience", but you can also fly in a cheap charter plane for something around three hours. Once in Bluefields you take a ferry (five bucks) to Big Corn Island and get away as quickly as possible, taking a small motorboat (we used to go fishing on boats like that when I was a kid) to the smaller island, antoher five bucks or so.. Electricity is limited, there is something like one phone, no paved roads and therefore no automobiles. An american hippie type has some huts he built and rents them out for between 30-80$ a night I think, but there are places to just plop down and camp or you can hang in a hammock somewhere, looks like its relatively cheap, five or ten bucks a night. You can get a lobster lunch for five dollars, and of course, the booze is inexpensive.. basically everything is super cheap, the people are nice and mostly speak english and accept greenbacks. It sounds too divine to pass up, but everytime I talk to my friends about it they give me that look- - and then remind themselves that I thought eating snails and being accosted by monkeys in Morocco was fun and write me off as a weirdo. Its rather off-putting.... So that's about all I know.

Let's go!

So I just asked the master diver @ work about it - he's never heard of Little Corn Island, but he said it should be great diving there. Not the best, because the waters are shallow, but very nice because it's out of the hurricane belt, unlike up around the corner off the coast of Honduras and Belize. Not that I know crap about diving, but I'll trust this guy and give it a go. hahaha.. when are we setting sail?

hehehe. I have a break between summer and fall semesters, and in mid march. Was thinking some time then.
