I know people who go there regularly and swear by it. The big thing is the vast difference between those who go to the all inclusive resorts (venturing off -- if ever -- on packaged, sanitzed tours), and those who go and rent a place to stay and kick back.
Personally, I'd do the latter...heck, on those resorts you could be anywhere! What's the point of Jamaica if you don't experience Jamaica...? However, in the "Sandals" crowd's defense, they are likely bombarded with warnings of the dangers of Jamaica's crime, drugs, poverty...
Not having been there, I can't speak from experience...
