Hey.
Finish University this summer and im wanting to go and work in Canada for a few months, just basically to get something different. Looking at flights they are pretty cheap coming from Scotland.
Does anybody know how hard/easy it is to get work over there in bars or clubs or whatever? Do you have to have a job ready before you can get a visa or can i get a visa and find a job when im over?
Any help would be great.

Hey Scottishboy!
Here's a quick link to a Canadian Goverment website with an overview of what needs to be done to work here legally. They've got all sorts of links and places to apply for a work permit 'n stuff. Hope this is a good start for you!

There are TONS of bars and clubs in toronto.. I know competition is there, but a scottish accent should give ya a leg up! Accents rock! also depending on which bar/club you apply you may need to be stunning. Most bars only hire rediculously goodlooking people (or what they think goodlooking people are) But not all bars... so just a heads up..

There are alllll types over here... I'm a quasi hippi surfer girl, who has a day job and wears business clothes... (the hippy part cause I play frisbee and hack and hate shoes and socks, but love Jack Johnson.. haha)
But you can get stuck up snobs , and party girls , it's very multi-cultural... but I do say that women over here like to be respected, even if they do sleep with you on the first night

Frisbee, what a game. Dont get to play it much over here tho as its always pishing down with rain. Cant wait until Jack Johnson plays in Glasgow, ill be there with bells on - found his first album ages ago and nobody else like him and now everyone wants a copy
All women like to be respected, its up to us men to ensure we at least try eh:D

So what did you end up doing Scottishboy? I'm actually trying to figure out how I can get a work visa for canada as well, though my ultimate goal is permanent residency and maybe citizenship. I found the government website really confusing...well maybe I was drunk. Seriously though, it seems like you have to have a skill that no canadian has in order to get a work visa there. Am I wrong in this interpretation? Let's see...as an American I bet I'm more cocky and narrow minded than any Canadian...that has to be some sort of skill
Oh yeah, one more thing. You know how you pretty much have to have a job lined up in order to get a work visa? Well, once you get up there, is it required that you only work that job? For example, if I were to get my girlfriend's dad to offer me a job, could I switch to a different one after I was there.... if anybody knows the answer to this question, I'll give them my my scab collection.

It's pretty easy to get a visa if you have a job offer letter from somewhere. Its easier to get a canadian visa than it is to get an american one thats for sure And apparantly as i just found out its SUPER easy to get an australian visa (this girl i know had hers in 24 hrs. WTF??) so maybe i should go there next lol

http://www.bunac.co.uk/ will help get you the visa, now if you are not a student then you can only do this once, if you are a student then you can do this more than once,
Contact em for more details, start working and saving, now, you need at least $1000 canadian dollars to satisfy immigration, but take more, at least get the details from bunac, decide where you want to fly to and research research research the area, make contacts, join user groups in the area for example , make contacts, it's nice to just meet up with people of a similar interest.
If you can find some work in a similar field, then you can use it as a way to get industry related international experience, (very useful) either that or just work and travel and gain experience of working in a different culture.
hope this helps.
Paul

Hey, does anybody know if a Canadian work visa is transferable? What I mean is: If I were to get a letter from a company saying that they had a job for me, and then I got there and they laid me off, would I be still eligible to find a different job with taht same work visa? Anybody...Bueller....Bueller...
