Howdy,
I have been pondering some possible travel destinations. Although, Canada is really sticking in my mind (Oww it hurts...) . Since it seems half of the active members here are from there, I probably found the right place. Anyways, I live in Cali, so BC seems to be the most convienient, but I have a friend that lives outside Mon-Ray-Ahl (as he says it) So, if I can bug him for a place to stay, that would cut down of costs significantly. However, I do really like Vancouver. I have only been there once, and that was for only a day. But it was really pretty. Kinda like Seattle, without all the pretense.
The main thing I would like to know is how the weather gets during the fall/early winter. I like to snowboard and make igloos, so maybe that can factor in somewhere. I dunno.
If there are people up there who wouldn't mind some adventure, I'd be up for that too. I love meeting new people and sharing cultures, and I won't even get blotto and puke all over your nice town. An added benifit I'm sure.
Thanks in advance
Paulo

Paulo I would like to welcome you to da boards and the Travelpunk family!!
BC is a great pick for a place to vacation, I live in Ontario on the other side of the country and I used to fly out to BC 4,5,6 times a year to snow board...normally the local mountains:
Cypress Bowl: 604-419-7669 (SNOW)
Grouse Mountain Snow Phone: 604-980-9311
Mount Seymour: 604-986-2261
I did make the trek to Whistler once, The Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains 2003 winter season is tentatively scheduled to open for November 22 (American Thanks Giving). However, historically the mountain has opened around the middle on November. As the weather conditions determine that eventual opening date, one set date is hard to give. Keep in mind that in November the Alpine will be open for skiing, and skiing down to the base of the mountains is not possible, most likely, until the middle of December when the snow-base has had a chance to accumulate.
The City of Vancouver is a pretty wicked town with the clubs and pub jump'n on a fri/sat night.
Dio will be able to give you a much better low down on her home town, she should be on in the next couple of days so check back!!
Here is a list of Hostels in the Vancouver Area.
Hope you make the trip to the Great White North!!!!

Yeah what he said ^! yah gotta love cd for taking the words out of your mouth. I can't tell ya much about snow boarding just because I hate snow and any sport that involves snow/cold well I won't partake in! But yeah grouse, cypress, seymour are the three local mountains. All withing 15-20 mins of downtown. Whistler is a 2-2.5 hour drive north of the city on the beautiful sea to sky highway. They start hiring for jobs in october so if that's what you were looking for then go up there then. It's overrun by australians though. you'll actually meet more aussies then canadians! Can't tell ya much about the mountain. Though it is a wicked place to party (er..that's the only reason i've ever gone there)
As for my city. It rocks. Though your coming in the fall? uh I could lie to you and say it's wonderful weather but that would be WRONG! :D It actually sucks shit here in the fall (especially nov.) It's usually grey and rainy everyday. i'm not lying. So fall is not the right time to come if i were you. ask again if you have any q's/

Thanks,
I lived in Everett, WA for a year, so I certainly know about suck-shit weather. It was more rainy and overcast there than in Seattle, which is a mere 20 miles south. Unfortunately, my savings is dwindling and I am living off my stock profits, and am getting close to dipping into my principle (bad). So, I have only a month or two before I will be joining the work force again. Soooo, that is the reason for the expressed urgency. Anyways, thanks a lot for the good info and suggestions.
G'day
Paulo

It all depends what you're particularly looking for. For history, see Ottawa or Edmonton. For fun in the big city - Toronto. If you like relaxing in a quaint little seaside town - Halifax. For the great outdoors - Vancouver, Calgary, or Yellowknife. You can't go wrong with Canada. I've taken many trips up there. See my (& others') reports in www.globosapien.net . (My code name is "shotclog".) Get out there & go wild!

I notice nobody ever mentions Winnipeg! Why does Winnipeg have such a boring reputation? Sure, it's freezing cold from November to April, sometimes it snows in May or like last year, in August, it's flat prairie, the mosquitos will eat you alive, but we're not so bad! In any case, it's in the middle of the country, so if anybody is ever passing through, we've got some interesting things to offer! I realize I'm not doing a great job promoting tourism in Winnipeg, but if anybody ever needs suggestions, I could think of a few!

And so the Winnipeg jokes begin...I guess I was asking for it! But from Vancouverites? I can't even respond, I like your city I guess! When I was in Europe this past summer, after saying I was Canadian, people would be like, "where you from? Winnipeg?" As if that would be a big insult... And as for the crime capital thing, at least we're known for something I guess! Although, I went on a tourist boat tour of our downtown the other day (don't ask), and I learned we're also the province that gives the most to charity in the world!
