Alright so i'm leaving for europe next month and have gotten down to the little details of my trip. i'm trying to figure out travel insurance and have a few questions....
1. is there some rule about leaving the country for more than six months? what does it apply to and what happens after i'm gone for six months? 2. somone told me that canadians get health coverage in the uk and ireland... is this true and if so are there any other countries that this applies to? 3. any suggestions about where to purchase travel insurance? i'm 23 (female) and traveling solo for an undetermined period of time (one way ticket....). |
I'm not Canadian, so I'm definitely talking out of my um....anyway, but it seems weird that your country would care how long your gone for. I know that most countries do limit the amount of time a foreigner can be in them though. Did you hear about some kind of penalty for being gone or something?
Maybe you turn into a pumpkin after six months...or worse, canada declares you an American!!! |
well i think the 6 month thing has something to do with losing our free health care. i'm not sure though.
|
no, theres no probly leaving the country for 6 months. anyway, where are you headed. i'm a 23 yo canuck who just got back from europe a couple months ago. went for 4 months. had the time of my life. have fun.

I know that we're covered by our health care plan for three months after leaving Canada. Im pretty sure coverage stops after that but i have a number in this book i got with my passport to phone about our health care if you like.

Jess, YES, when you leave the country for more than 6 months, you will have to register again when coming back.
However, a person is allowed to stay outside the country up to one year, without losing his/her admissibility, once every 7 years. If you stay longer, I don't know how you get admitted back though... Anyway, you'll need to contact your provincial section to inform them of your plan, to get the official acceptation from the government. I got a letter from them stating I was to keep my admissibility. If you are unsure of the duration of your trip, I guess you better say one year, and live with the consequence if you stay longer. I guess. For travel insurance, I don't know any company that will accept "undetermined period of travel". I think the longest is one year. I got mine from Blue Cross. It was around $600 for one year. |

I have a question for canadians. When are you going to acknowledge you are America's hat?
|
check out these websites
www.voyage.gc.ca www.cpha.ca Our health insurance becomes invalid between 3 and 6 months living outside canada and that time varies from province to province. Hope that helps!! |

We're bigger and on top. If this were prison you'd be our bitch!
Crap, I suppose I should look into going to school there for 2 years... I wonder what'll happen to my health care. |
Lol. Yeah i love canada. I would give my right nut to live in Montreal right now. Tried twice, and it fucked up both times. I honestly admire Canada...but then again how couldn't someone admire you fucks?
Poutine son. Poutine. |
Poutine may be the fattiest food ever. But my goodness if it's not the best tasting stuff ever made!
|
"Chicharron" is the the "fattiest food" in the world Pork skin fried in grease!
|
I love how this topic went from travel insurance to poutine...
I would suggest (if you're a student, or not) checking out www.swap.ca. It's an organized working abroad program that sets you up with everything you need to know. I thought about doing it, but I'm sure the website or a brochure will at least answer some more questions. |
yeah if you have any questions about SWAP as well i registered for it and have done all the crap so if you have any questions just post them and ill see what i can do lol
|
