Hello
This is my first Post, super rad sight guys.
anyway... I am pretty into travel and such, though mostly in canada so far. I think I will head to europe soon for a few months, but my real passion is backcountry canoe trips.
My favorite place to go canoeing has always been algonquin park. The way the clouds linger on the lakes in the morning is freakin unbelieveable. Its tranquil and so incredably giving to a spirit of exploration. Each approaching corner holds so much intrigue; whether it be a long winding river, an expansive lake or a moose.
but yeah... I am looking for some cool places to go in America, but I would like some first hand knowledge, or whatever: just looking for some canoe chatter.

Hi!
Welcome to the boards!! Yeah I love canoeing as well. I grew up doing it at my cabin and damn everytime I go camping/cottaging I am the first chicka in the canoe. Never gone for a long trip in N. America though. When i was in Australia I went on a three day canoe trip in the Noosa Everglades. Awesome, though near the end my ass was raw. It was hilarious though. A company set it up where they partner you up with 10 other backpackers, the give you a map, boat you to the starting point and then go 'see ya in three days'! Let's just say at least we had a big enough supply of booze.
Looking forward to hearing your stories !

I think one of my greatest experiences while travelling was during an excursion to New Orleans for a week. One day we rented a car and headed out to Lafette National Park (about an hour north). Nearly there, we spotted a quaint tavern on the side of the road which had several canoes in racks along the side and a large sign saying "Self Guided Tours". For $20 we got a canoe all afternoon and a map of the canals running all through the wilderness behind the tavern. Let me tell you, you know it's the real deal when 6 foot alligators are swimming next to you, turtles are climbing logs and not another soul is to be seen. We had three hours of true bayou experience that I will never forget.

My most memorable (probably not my favourite though) was when I was in Algonquin back country for 5 days canoeing with my leadership class.. .a tornado swept in while we were out on the middle of a lake and could barely make it to the shore... once we did we attempted to set up some kind of shelter... most of us didn't get the tents up before they were full of water... so we basically all piled into one big tent. 10 of us in a 6 person tent. None of us got dinner... and the next day we woke up to find food everywhere because one of the groups didn't bother to secure their lines from the tree they hung their pack from.
The rest of the trip was awesome!! even though we had to give up some of our food to the group that lost theirs.

I went 3 times this year...
the last time was in late august: I took my new girlfriend at the time and a buddy into algonquin park for 3 days down the Tim River. Tim River is a pretty rad place, though at this time of year, it is quite the voyage. There is a stupid amount of low water, and the river between Tim Lake and Rosebury lake is super narrow. The serious upside is the lack of bugs. anyway...
I would say Rosebury Lake is probably my favorite in the park - super pretty, georgeous white sand (no joke) beach. pretty much no one is ever on the lake. There was a family of 8 loon chillin there. I think the loon tend to hang out together more in the late months; THey were constantly singing, or running accross the water. awesome sight.
anyway... the plan was to simply do a there and back... first day to Rosebury, second back to Tim, and third out...
easy stuff cause my girl and buddy hadn't really gone before.
anyway... by the end of the first day... they were both frustrated with the Tim, what with having to lift the canoe over something like 6 beaver dams. So... yeah... they wanted to go another way: only other option 8, 500 metres of portage in one day. hahaha
so we did it.
by the second last portage the sun was definately setting, but the two of them wanted to go on as we passed the last campsight option. it was on the next portage that it started to get interesting... I don't know if it was that no one really does this route or what... but I started noticing footprints, then noticing big piles of crap... and yeah... it wasn't moose stuff.
So... I tried to take it easy, but man... for I knew there were bears all around us. I started trying to find conversation so I could keep tabs on where the other two were. F. terrifying. As we made it through the last portage and stared at Tim Lake, the sun had completely set. But man... stupidest thing I have done in awhile.
I had a plan: if you would like to know to deal with the Bear. hehe
Here goes:
the three person and a canoe bear defence.
1. THe Canoe must be held as high as possible. So... whether you are carrying the canoe double or single simply raise the canoe over your head as high as it can go.
2. all people should be under the canoe.
3. Lots of yelling, hollering, screaming (maybe if someone isn't lifting the canoe they can throw stuff... or start swinging the paddles about.
4. WHen the Bear charges at you... be patient.... be patient, and just as its about to eat your girlfriend - throw the canoe at the bear. If you time this wrong... not too sure if it will work.
I have a single man and 4 rock bear defence too. but that's for another time

I did a 6 week kayaking trip through Western Europe - it was amazing. Wouldn't have gone if a friend hadn't invited me. Other than that do mostly hiking.

Sounds horrible KCL. Canoe Kid - too funny. Would be scary though. Scotters - Next time I go to NOLA I am doing that! Everytime we go, we swear we're going down somewhere cool so I can see some gators (live ones), but we never do.
There are some really pretty places in Wisconsin to go. Kickapoo River's fun and super windy. There are some great sandbars and cliffs. The Mississippi would be fun just for the scenery and the great length of it.
We used to go canoeing a lot, but don't anymore after a horrible experience a few years ago. He he.

I work in northern Sask. Canada on a major river system, and right at our resort is one spot that you cannot canoe or portage past, so alot of people either have rides set up to pick them up at our camp or stay with us for a bit and then we get them somewhere. Well this year, we had a couple teachers come canoeing through. They had started in minnesota and were gonna make it all the way up the mackenzie to a small indian community north of the artic circle to teach for the winter. super wicked. I had to drive them past the rapids that are by our camp and the dude rode in the box of the truck to keep the canoe from falling out and the lady rode up front with me and told me about her time in india and tibet and how they had saved up for 3 years to take a 1 year trip. Totally enlightening. They started at ice out in MN and were hopin to get to their destination before the ice came in. They smelt bad, hehee, but they were the nicest people. can't believe i've never taken a big canoe trip up there.

I worked at a overnight camp for a couple weeks this past summer, and one week we took these 12 year old girls on a canoe trip. It wasn't exactly easy, either, with quite a few portages and it was really hot one day, super windy the next. But it was a memorable trip cause I was so impressed by these girls throwing a canoe that weighed 10 million times as much as them over their heads and never complaining. I wish I had been like that when I was younger...I was a wuss.

I also haven't actually done a whole canoe trip, but I think summer I am going to go on a trip I've been trying to do for a couple of years. There is a 5 day route around the French River up here in Ontario. Supposed to be breath taking and a great challenge! I love being on Georgian Bay in the summer, it's just so damn pretty!

Check out Maine. My family has a summer place up there and there are rivers everywhere. whether you just wanna canoe down a slow-winding river, or run through a gorge where every turn brings adventure, theres a place for you. Northern Outdoors is a huge outfitter and you can find some information on their website. I think Maine is truly god's country. there are so many rivers and lakes throughout the land. its amazing and so much is untouched by the outside world.
check it out
