If your in a big City like NEW YORK CITY or LONDON and you've got no money for a hostle but you've got a really nice 2 person backpacking tent...

Where could i look for a nice place to camp out?

I'm from NYC and I have my own Idea's, I just and to get some other opintions.
Remember I'm in a CITY!!! I have to stay away from places where law enforcement may tell me to leave from and places that I could also get robbed and killed.

I don't expect to many responses to this ~

In Paris there's a lovely park called the Bois de Bologne that has some camping available; other cities may have some outlying parks where you could get away with it. I wouldn't recommend it in London though-- the Ol' Bill will roust you immediately. If you're talking about setting up your tent just *anywhere* in a city, well-- you're going to run into a few problems, as I'm sure you realize. Some cities will be more tolerant of that because they have a higher population of homeless people, others won't-- and always, always assume that someone will likely try to rob you in the middle of the night. By and large the crime in Europe, at least, is less likely to be violent than in many American cities such as NYC. But thieving is not just an internally respected sport, it's a career for many and a fine art perfected to its utmost levels by many, many more. Personally? I'd rather fork over the equivalent of $5 to $35 per night for a hostel room-- and meet tons of interesting people in the process-- to keep my passport and wallet safe.

I absolutely love camping but, man, that's for the woods. When in Rome (or London or Paris or NYC)... you know how it goes.

Yea, camping is for the backcountry - in the city you'll proably find little to none, and if you do you be camping illegally most times.

Go to an airport or train station and just sleep there. It'll be safer.

I agree with what most of the people here have said, leave your tent in the country, setting it up in a big city is a good way to get arrested or mugged. Having spent nights outside in New York, here is what I can offer. WARNING: I am not responsible for what may happen (this is my way of saying that you better have balls of steel).

1) Train station/airport: This is usually a fairly safe option, however, police tend to run you off in bigger train stations, and in airports they tend to ask to see your tickets.

2) Parks: This is the most dangerous place you can possibly stay, and I would not recommend it. My first night in New York I attempted to get an hour or two sleep behind a bench in central park. I managed to get a little rest, but there are some very interesting people at odd hours in the city.

3) Abandoned buildings: This is probably one of the worst options you can choose as abandoned buildings are abandoned for a reason, usually because they are not safe to be in. Also, guard dogs or rent a cops can be a major hassle. You can be arrested because you are trespassing.

4) http://www.globalfreeloaders.com
If you are as broke as a joke and need a place to stay, check out this website. Quite often you can find people that will either offer you a chunk of grass to set up a tent or even a bed or sofa to crash on for the night absolutely free. You have to give them advance warning, but if you are planning on coming and want to camp, just search the site for people with tent space and I am sure you will find something!

Hope this helps some, and be safe wherever you sleep

I've had friends that pulled the old one-two on hotels too. Where you go to a hotel with the doors that face the parking lot and ask to see a room, have a friend stay in the room, return the keys, wait for a couple minutes to see if the attendent comes out and then whala! Free room!
*note TRAVELPUNK! does NOT condone stealing in anyway shape or form*
*note i wouldn't know anything about this having "never done it myself" *

Another option is the roof's of mcdonalds, taco bell etc. They always have ladders on the sides and almost always have flat roofs that stay reasonably warm.

My experience is that train stations close during the night to non-users. Maybe I wasn't lucky, but both in Vienna and Budapest, they closed down between around midnight and 5 in the morning.

In Budapest, where I was only transiting and my train was at 5 am, I ended up spending the night outside, on the ground, surrounded by homeless who kicked me when I was using their spots, or try to lay down on me to... Not a good night !

In Vienna, same thing, transiting. The police officers let me in for the night. They felt I was a bit in danger I suppose, surrounded by junkies and homeless people. Once inside, they asked me to hide from the huge windows, so noone would know about my presence.

So options for rare situations I would advise, unless you're insomniac !

You are talking about NYC, the city that never sleeps. My advice is to NOT SLEEP!

Or do like my gringo friend Ryan did in Costa Rica- Got a bus at 5am to San Jose? Stay up all night hiking the rainforest/climbing a mountain.

Well, maybe no mountains outside of the landfills on Staten Island, but you get the point, right? :D
