OK, so my question is this. Since I planned on splitting up time between hostels and camping, I wanted to know what campgrounds did people enjoy most/ value? Which ones had the most amennities? Ill be in western/central/eatsern for awhile and then down to Italy and Spain.

I've done a lot of camping in Italy and Spain, but rarely in campgrounds. Usely hit beach and went backcountry and such - so much fun!

has it ever been a problem camping on the beach with police, or anyone for that matter. permits? Was this with a tent or just sleeping bag?This could be a good and free option!

I am sure there are places that you could get in trouble - but that is just a matter of being smart. I usually camped with a tent.

hate to sound like a wuss, but i can't imagine an incursion in the middle of the night and having to fumble for a flashlight AND phrase book >_<! But I've never backpacked a foreign country at all :(

I also would like to hear anyones answers on this one, particularly in the Uk (lol, i'm too partial to l'anglaise)

italy is probably just like the u.s. man... but italy is almost all coastline. you just have to find a spot of beach that is chill.... it helps to carry some lucky charms too...

Tarracco Campground in Tarragona, Spain (about an hour south of Barca, so much less touristy) was really nice. It came to about 11 Euro a night for two people (I think about 7 for 1). The sites had a bit of privacy with plants/trees/bushes growing in between them. It was like a 30 second walk to the Med. They had nice toilets and showers. There was a bar/restuarant at the edge of the campground with a mini mart that sold a little of everything (including fresh bread) and there were also cabanas on the beach. It was next to a bus line (about a five minute walk) to head into town to shop or sightsee. It was really nice and we plan to go back.

you actually paid for camping??? wow.. i never pay for camping.. that is such a waste of money.. .. why pay someone 10-20 bucks for aiece of dirt to put your tent on it.. thats like paying for water ... who thought of that shit?

sorry floyd, but i was looking for options as i wander around. trust me i plan on taking advantage of "free dirt" when i can :) its more for the conveinences that id stay at a campground. its nice to have a store, bathroom, laundry, showers for a few dollars, then to camp out somewhere and not have those available when you wanted them!

Sure I paid for camping. Had a convenient place to sleep next to the Med. sea without being awoken to move off the beach or sleeping on rocks. I wouldn't exactly consider it a waste of money.

I stayed there this summer, the showers & toilets are brand spankingly new, it has a large pool and spa - perfect for chilling out in the early evening sun after a hard days walking around town.

Has a supermarket across the road.. (cheap food & booze) and a restaurant and bar with entertainment and drinking games every evening, and only 1Euro 10min shuttle bus away from Rome centre. :thumbup:

I'm looking at doing this, (camping a decent part of my stay in Europe) but did any of you find it annoying or a large inconvenience in having your packs on you 15+ hours a day?

I'm assuming that each night you pack all your gear back up and carry it with you to whatever sites you're going to see that day?

I like the idea of being able to leave a majority of my stuff aside from valuables in a locker at a hostel and lightening up the load for parts of the day?

Any suggestions, or help? .. is it not a big deal or am I just gonna have to suck it up?

I only camped once in Amsterdam at camp Zeeburg I dink it where called. It had everything you needed.

In Ireland there's a really cool place called lettergesh on the galway cost, you'll more or less have 10-20 miles of beach to yourself during the day, at night the tide comes right up to the rocks. Your right in the middle of connemra aswell so you have the best senery available.
