Sleeping Bags
So I am in need of a new sleeping bag. The one I have been using for car camping during the summers is okay still, but whenever I hike with it it is so big and bulkie it is more of a pain.
My question is though about the mummy bags. I have been looking at these and like how they seem to be smaller (footprint wise) and lighter than a conventional bag. They look like maybe warmer too since they wrap right around you. Does anyone here use them or feel like they are better/worse than a conventional bag? SuDZ |
i haven't used a conventional bags in years man. I kinda thought they stopped making them...
Yeah go with a mummy bag. I'm on my second bag in the last 4 years and I love em. REI makes some good ones cheap else I'd recommend North Face. |
I agree on the Mummy bag... best idea ever... and I tend to buy a 3 season bag and then purchase a fleece lining to add for colder days

Thanks for the info folks. I wasn't sure if they felt like they were going to be kind of restricted feeling or what not. Can you lay just as easily on your sides in them or do they force you to kind of lay on your back?

i prefer a mummy bag, i use a go-lite ultralight bag, they cost more but they compress a lot smaller than most others.
mine they entire bag rolls when i roll on my side. doesnt feel restrictive at all and i can move my arms around just fine. the only part i have an isue is,that sometimes i have to sleep with my knees up around my chest. and that can be tricky |

i always buy the biggest mothatruckin bag I can find too when I go shopping. I like to have my pillow type thing inside the bag with me...usually thats the compression bag for the sleeping bag stuffed with clothes and I tend to sleep on my arms so if your like me then go for the big one... oh and i buy big cause im freakin huge too.
In addition to those suggestions also look for the bags that have like rubber band things all the way down so the bag squeezes you to trap out excess air. It works like a charm. |
sierra designs makes some really good compressable sleeping bags, also look at Vango - simply amazing, but only in Europe.

I wound up getting my bag the other night. I wound up with a North face mummy bag. I tested it out in my living room the other night basically cause I just wanted to try it. It is a +20 bag and had some nice little features to it like where the drawstrings are etc. It packs up pretty small and fits either indide my pack just fine or hang from it using the stuff sack it came with. It comes in at around 3.5 pounds or so.
I can't wait for like another 15 days until I get to take it camping. SuDZ |
