More Pack questions

So I have a $50 gift card to Dicks Sporting Goods... So I figure I can pick up a decent pack for $50 dollars out of my pocket.

Just going through the website I've found these two so far...

Not looking for anything amazing, just something to use for my trip to NYC/Philly, and maybe even to Australia if that is still in order. Remember I am a big guy, so my clothes are going to be sometimes twice as big as you skinny folk. Regardless, just looking for some advice.

That Big Bear 82 is enormous - 5,000 inches! I've always found that if I use a bigger bag, I just end up packing more things. Time of your trips will influence it as well - do you need 4 sweaters or will just 1 sweatshirt suffice? That kinda thing. The negative on the smaller one IMHO is that it is top-loading.

In the end its what you are most comfortable with because its your money you're spending and you're the one who will be carrying it around.

I'm not exactly a skinny bitch =] and right now I'm carrying a 45 liter pack...and I'm thinking about downgrading to 35 liter next time. I'd go for the 55L one or a 60L. You're gonna have to lug that mofo around remember. 80L is alooot. And yes I agree ^^^ you will end up packing stuff you don't need.

Let me also suggest as a fellow bigger guy, that you pack at least one pair of tightish pants (try to get some with elastic waists) as you will probably lose a fair amount of weight. I was a 40" when I left and packed stretchy 38s. I am now needing the tightest notch on my belt to keep them up.

That is one thing I am hoping is a side effect of my next trip to either Europe or where ever. I just met a girl from Germany studying here at my Uni. So hopefully that will bloom into having somewhere to stay in the northwest part of Germany where she's from . I need to get away from the fast food nation for awhile.

Anyway thanks for the help guys, I'm just going to have to hit up a dicks soon and try some packs on I suppose.

haha i can relate! last year when i went travelling i had a 100l sack (to be fair though i was moving a lot of stuff home for my stepmum from my dads house so had to fill it to come home full of curtains and all sorts) and i weghed around 15 stone. now im thinking between a 35-45 for a 4 month trip and i now weigh a cushy 11 stone and going down. you will loose weight - especially if you lug a 100l pack with you!

a bit of advice though, take the pack out, full, before you go travelling, and get the straps set properly. my pack has this annoying bit that used to cut into my neck and it took ages for me to find a solution - which was loose some stones or get a pack that fits! just make sure your comfortable in it, thats whats important as a bad fitting back can f**k your back up big time

Well back to thinking about getting a pack. Never got one, but as fall aproaches, me need for one is increasing.

Regardless, the main reason I want one is for my 'move' to Australia. However I was doing some thinking, realizing that why get a gigantic one. Get a medium sized pack, and take a suitcase(which I was already planning). That way if I want to do trips to say South East Asia, I wont be stuck with a gigantic pack.

I guess I would like to go for the best value(I still have a 50 dollar gift certificate), in terms of durability and comfort. Just wanted to get some opinions though. Overall, these are my options http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/se...e%20Packs&sr=1

I'd like to spend no more than $100 out of my own pocket($150 with gift card).
