Hi All
i was just wondering how you attach a cable lock to a backpack?
do you attach it at the handle or the strap? cos it looks pretty easy to just cut-off!
would a pacsafe be better, as this covers the whole pack? or do i just not have a clue what is going on???

Eagle Creek's Transcontinental Journey has a steel cable woven into the bag, and is a pretty damned big pack. Sold me on that feature primarily.

The problem with pack safety is that even with a lock on it, all someone has to do is run a razor down the pack itself, slashing it open and snagging all your loot.

A cable lock (or even locks that prevent the zippers from being opened) is good to prevent casual theft...i.e. your roomate decides spur of the moment to have a look through your pack to see if there is anything interesting. A determined and well prepared thief will get through. That said, I think casual theft is more of a worry and so it does provide SOME measure of safety. If you leave anything of value in your pack during the day, leave it well hidden. I would recommend bringing things like electronics/camera/I-Pod in a day pack that is attached to you at all times. You can use smaller combo locks to lock up a pouch on the daypack to guard against pickpockets (but a razor will still do you in). Nothing is 100% effective, but even if you cut your risk in half, its better than nothing.

I added some metal ringed holes to my pack and bought a retractable cable lock which I string through it and then lock... if someone wants into a pack they'll get in... the whole point is to make it a little less easy and casual an experience.

If someone really wants to steal your pack, then they will find away in.
In a room of half a dozen packs you dont want yours to be the easiest to access. Alot of people in your dorm wont lock their packs. As long as yours is cabled to the bed then no one will take it. If it has a lock on the zipper, no one will open it. There will be plenty of other pcks with no locks at all for the theif to go through.

I think if someone is willing to run a razor down the entire length of your pack... you're pretty screwed no matter what kind of pack you got. They must be pretty determined to rob you.

i always think of having locks and stuff on your pack is an invitation for someone to slash it open and get wat valuables your trying to protect...

I saw a wire net that wrapped around the whole bag and had a cable w/ lock, what are these called? And whats the best place to buy one?

Its called a PacSafe and you can search for them on Amazon. I thought I saw some on there a month or so ago for around 20 dollars.

On the topic of securing a pack - I read this under South America travel tips but it might be useful anywhere. If you attach an angel keychain to your pack some theives are superstitious and they will leave your pack alone.
