You have a great site here. This was the site that actually gave me the inspiration to wanna go to Europe.
I posted on this site a while ago, the question was whether brothers (blacks) were welcomed in Europe. Because I did not want to take an 8 + hour flight just so that Germans would be hating on me. Anyways,
I need help picking a back pack and I am not sure which one to get. I am leaving for Europe on x mas for a month long trip. I already went to your back pack section which was very comprehensive and gave me an idea about backpacks. However, most of the backpacks listed are discounted or are no longer sold. Searching for them on google proved to be a fruitless pursuit because for some reason 99.9 % of the online stores out there are nothing more but referral service for ebags. Ebags is not carrying any of those bags. Thus, i was like a dog chasing his tail. I was thinking of buying the Eagle Creek Continental Journey(http://www.rei.com/online/store/Prod...8000&langId=-1). However, The problem with this backpack is that it looks a bit small (I want to take my baby blue timberlands with me plus all my tupac's CD's). Furthermore, I don’t know whether it has an internal frame. Thanks in advance for your help.

Congrats on your trip! I am dying waiting for my own, and am really jealous that you are leaving so soon!

Regarding packs, I just got the Columbia Sportswear Europacker, and it seems REALLY awesome. I'm a medium sized guy, and it fits perfectly on my frame. I've loaded it up with weight and carried it around a bit, and find that the distribution is just about perfect. The detachable daypack is great too, so I can take my essentials and laptop with me when I leave the rest at the hostel.

Regarding potential racial tension, I don't think you will have any problems. Europe is a lot closer to Africa and Asia than we are, and thus have a lot more influx of immigrants from those countries. My mom is Algerian and has always been treated with total respect in France; It helps that we all speak French, and that's more arab than black, but I think if anything Europe is more colorblind than America has ever been. After all, they say they are 10 years ahead of us in terms of society at any given time, so I think it'll be awesome!

Looking forward to hearing about it, and let us know what you get in terms of pack!

I remember that post actually, that was a great question, we have had another since then thats good aswell about descrimination and travel, here check this out...Racism

As for your pack...

I do not know a specific one to recommend, but here are some tips while your looking:

Internal Frame

One that opens up like a suit case ( from the front) and not a top load

One that comes with a daypack that zips right onto the mother bag

Make sure you get to try it on with weight in it

A zippered seperator on the inside to keep you dirty cloths away from your clean cloths

As many pockets as possible, I don';t think you can ever have to many!

Just some things to think about...

And Welcome back!!!!

I can understand your feelings. Seeing as I live in a pretty diverse, also segragated areas, it amazes me how many people around here are biased just based off a persons skin or where they are from. Being from Detroit, we have a large black (brother) population in the city itself, a large arab population just west of the city in dearborn, and of course a lot of white people (from several countries), even our fair share of indians, orientals, and hispanics. This area should just be hopping with diversity, unfortunately too many people refuse to work together. Even the mayor of Detroit says they should have a black image, and black this and black that. I think we should have a diverse image, I don't mind things like mexican town or china town, because I think its cool to have a peice of that culture in your own city, but be willing to accept others. That is just different cultures, and that is what is supposed to be so great about the US is the diversity of cultures. Somewhere in the mix someone didn't get the whole plan.

Like I've said before the only race is the human race. To be so bothersome about color and its image is just ludicris. Unfortunately my views are not quite shared by the masses. :(

Thanks everyone. I think I’ll get the Columbia euro packer instead like iamlindoro did. By the way iamlindoro do you think the Columbia back pack can be carried on the plane as a carry on? Because I don’t want to risk the airline losing my bag.

nyblackpapi-

I know what you mean. Yeah, I think it'll be possible to get it on an airline as your carry-on, assuming it's not filled to bursting or anything. I'd say the filled size is about that of a medium to large duffel bag, but with that as your only carry on, I doubt anyone would mind. Then again, I guess it depends entirely on whether the flight attendant is having a good day. What I'm planning on doing is putting the essentials (expensive stuff, paperwork) in the daypack, that way if someone along the way tries to separate me from the bag, I can detach the daypack, carry that on with NO trouble, and I only have to check my clothes.

Good luck! Can't wait to hear what you end up doing.
