In exactly one month I will be hitting the road for eight long months. I've traveled comfortable for three months with just the shoes on my feet, but have been thinking that for 8 months it would be nice to have two pairs.
My all purpose travel shoes are my clarks hi-trek boots. They are light, stylish and beyond comfortable. But they are still boots.
If i bring another pair they will be my clarks wallibees, which are the best shoes ever.
Any thoughs?
Have you traveled with more then one pair before?

Something like Teva sandals work well - good for walking long distances, but also good for everyday use - in summer at least

I agree with KCL - I took one pair or hikers (Merell) and a pair of Tevas. Honestly, they saved my butt on the hotter days in Nice and Prague. They are very light, so packing them is not a problem, perfect for the beach, good enough for walking the entire day in them if you need to and they make good shower shoes for those dorm showers you wouldn't go into in bare feet (they dry quickly).

All I wore were Reef flip flops. I HATE shoes. I did bring a pair of Nikes though, but never wore them. I was there during the summer though. I noticed I got really bored with my outfits, even with accessories, so two pairs of shoes couldn't hurt if you have the space (coming from someone who has a shoe collection the size of a Wal Mart Super Center).

I always recommend bringing a second pair of shoes. After walking umpteen miles with a heavy pack, it doesn't matter how good your shoes are, they're still going to give you a little bit of discomfort. It's nice to change into a different pair for the next day and switch back and forth whenever you want. This really saved my ass on my 5-week trip, let me tell ya.

I am only used to backpacking mostly, and i learned the hard way recently how important back-ups are. I had one pair of good hikers, and one pair of decent flip-flops (which were basically shower shoes).
Stupidity one night led to my melting the toes of the hikers (aye, it happens) leading me to put to much need on the flip-flops, which promptly blew out a few days later in a tidal area. I ended up lashing the blown flips to my legs ancient greek style, but comfort was lacking.

Have SOMETHING to back up your shoes, yeah, Tevas are great. Something hella light, but WITH traction, especially if you will be doing anything close to serious hiking.

Well, by now deadguy is already on his trip. I wonder if he took a second pair?

I just got back from a month backpacking in Ireland and for the first time ever I took a second pair. The hiking boots for rainy days and general long distance walking with or without my backpack. (I don't know how you guys carry your packs wearing just flip-flops!!) and a second pair of "cute" shoes for warmer days and for going to the pubs, hanging out at the hostels, etc. I'm really glad I brought them!

I always pack, no matter where I go some Teva Terras I've had for too many years to think about as a backup water-whatever lashed to the pack. The Terras are so damned old but don't get much use since I'm almost always in my Dansko kitchen clogs


But anyway, I'd suggest any decent waterproof shoe as a starter. I picked the Merrell Chameleon II's out for my Costa Rica trip in January. I've been wearing them as much as possible to break them in. In the past I've traveled with waterproof Timberland Eurohikers (a great all-around walking boot, but not the best soles. They wear thin fast. that and they can't handle real trails.) as my primary. I used them on ski trips apres ski mostly. Very comfortable.

I loved havin' two pairs of shoes with me and I was only gone like 6 weeks! I brought 1 pair of hikers which were worn in before I left, (Weren't really girly, but damn, I could walk on anything without a problem) and a pair of athletic sandles. Good for when I knew I was going to get my shoes wet! Although they sucked for walking uphill when they were wet.

2 pairs, it's a good thing!

I've been thinking about footwear aswell.

A german friend I knew always wore a pair of blue/grey Docksiders and I was thinking about getting a pair that's waterproof. He'd wear them to clubs dressed up and also with no socks and kacki shorts casually. Plus some are waterproof, lightweight, and pack flat.

I'm thinkin of gettin some if i find a deal. does anybody else wear these? Good idea or bad?

Well, your Lordship, I think that Docksiders or other types of boat shoes are the most uncomfortable shit on the planet, but look uber-kool without socks if you just got off your J65 and are sipping a rum-loaded drink at the Yacht Club... :D

I stand by the suggestion of solid footwear and a secondary set. But my preference is a good set of AT-type sneakers.
