Aaaah so I'm freaking out that the backpack I ordered is not going to be good for my trip! I'm going to be 'packing around New Zealand for about 3 weeks, and here's what I got for it, the Granite Gear Precipice:

http://www.granitegear.com/products/backpa...pice/index.html

I got this one because it's smaller, and I'm real short, so it fits me nicely. BUT it doesn't have a daypack, is only top-loading, no side pockets, AND is only 2800 cubes. In the store it looked big enough, but on the website it's classified as a DAY pack!

Will this be okay? OR should I consider finding another one??

hey..!
looks like a great pack. byo daypack i guess./
that granite pack has the flexible top type arrangement so i'm sure you could fit a couple extra cubes in there. just pack lite.
and don't worry about how they classify stuff. nooboody knoowws - it's marketing with the exception of some companies that prolly have little bitty differences in, like, suspension belts or something to make the classification. if it's comf, i think you're good to go.
btw, what's your packing list?

Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be fine. :) If you weren't freaking out about your backpack you'd be freaking out about something else, trust me. If you tried it out in the store and it seemed good enough, well, then it should be just fine. My backpack is a toploader and doesn't have a detachable daypack and I got around a 5 week trip easily.

You're going to have a great time!

Thanks for the votes of confidence you guys! I'm feeling better about it now, I figure I'll just bring a small messenger bag to carry around during the day. I don't really have a specific packing list yet, because before the actual backpacking part of my trip, I'm studying for a semester at the Univ of Sydney. So for now I'm just stuffing things in there to get over there. ;) And you're right space - whenever I'm not freaking out about my gear, I am about something else! I need to chiiiiill and just look forward to my trip. :)

Like everyone is saying, you'll panic about it now but then next time you'll realize so much better how and what to pack that you'll think you were crazy the first time for letting it bug you. You'll do just fine.

Honestly, most of the day packs that come with that backpacks are garbage. I've only seen a few that I liked. I wouldn't buy a backpack based on the daypack that comes with it. You're better off going out and buying something else or using your messenger bag.

Don't stress about it

I decided to not go with a daypack that came with the big backpack either. I kinda like the weight distribution of a general backpack and tossing in a messenger bag that I can pop out when I need it. Plus I find carrying the two of them at the same time much easier.
