Back pack
I think its a pretty good size for keeping everything with you at all times much like an oversized day pack. Anyone ever buy one of these?

My mom has one. It's fine. But don't confuse it with a "real" backpack-- this is basically a carry-on size, non-wheeled suitcase that you can *also* carry on your back if you want. I'd say it's definitely too big to use for a daypack though.

Looking at it I have to agree with SV. It doesn't look like it would be as versatile as a regular travelpack would be. I mean you can't dettach a smaller pack from it or it also wont have all the extra comfort options to make lugging it around for a few days or hours all that optimal.

Okay, I've clearly had too much caffeine...

So SV you said your mom has one? how are the straps on it? thats my pet peeve with any packs, the straps have to feel right...
Its not much bigger than the pack I use for my school books, only 4 inches taller, which can account for alot, but im still considering it over a traditional pack because of its cubelike compactness.

She let me try it on when I took my last trip. I loaded it up and walked for about two miles. Came back and said that I was going to look for another pack, but if I couldn't find one that fit better I'd use it. I did find another one. Translation: it's not terrible, but it sure as hell ain't built for long treks on foot. It's better suited to the budget-minded-but-can't-travel-without-renting-a-car-everywhere-we-go set. Which isn't all that surprising since that's pretty much Rick Steves' target audience anyway.

It doesn't look like it has a frame built in...am I right? That'll suck if you have to carry it for vary long. I would suggest getting a backpack and a duffle to put it in for air travel. Many companies make a duffle specificly to fit their packs with compression straps and such.

I ended up getting a Eagle Creek, Travel Bag. The Explorer. Its very nice and has plenty of room so far. I've yet to even put anything in the day pack part. and it comes with a duffle that goes over it. Still packing it though for its first test run... I wonder if walking the woods at night around my house with a big bag on my back is at all scary for my neighbors....
