I take a smaller bag than Omisan, but if I accumulate some crap to bring back I buy a cheapie piece of shit suitcase and put the stuff in that. It's worked so far.

My pack is about 6000 ci, but I usually have a little extra space, unless I am going backcountry camping for a week or more. I have a duffle bag that I put my pack in that has compression straps and shit (this way it doesn't get tore up by the airline bastards), and it packs down to nothing, so if I have extra stuff on the way back I can shove it in there.
