hey hey,

i have read a few backpack thread, but have a few more direct questions. Is a pack with a detachable pack absolutly a need, or can you manage just fine without the daypack? I have been searching, but cannot find many w/daypacks, and the ones I find are so-so. What do you all have? What do yo think about the daypack?

It is nice to have a detatchable day pack, but certainly not necessary (in my opinion). I looked at packs that had that feature and found that I really didn't like the set up of most of them, b/c they had to compromise other features to do so. I usually just pack a small day pack for my camera and such, it use it inside my large pack as a divider, so it is helpful in that sense too.

for my last trip i took my 3500 cubic inch Kelty with my 1700 cubic inch Camelbak. I also took a caribeaner with and clipped the camelbak to the kelty and away i went. Worked awesome and i didnt have to spend a crapload. I also had the two packs lying around from weekend trips and mountain biking.

One of my concerns when I backpack is not to give the impression I'm a rich tourist (which I'm not anyway...), in order to not be scamed nor be the victim of a pickpocket :greenguy: , and in more poor countries to avoid being harassed and show them respect. So the kind of day pack we use may bring undesired attention to us.

What a friend of mine does is carry around his day stuff in a plastic bag from a local shop of the country he's travelling in (grocery store for example).

I use an across the shoulder day pack that looks warn out (I've made it so by brushing it hard and putting it in the drying machine a few times), and I've never had any problems, even in places that are said to be risky for tourists, like Bucharest.

Oh, and even though you probably know it, never ever carry all your valuables (passport, visas, etc.) in your day pack. No magic will prevent you from loss or thieves. I've met a few people who had serious problems because of that... The "stomach pocket" is the best I've found.

I don't like to wear a day pack if I can avoid it. If its hot out it makes your back all sweaty and it says 'hey look at me, i'm a tourist'. I've got this courier bag i'm taking with me. We'll see how that works out for me.
