oh yeah, you shouldn't worry too much about people ripping you off in ebay, the bid thingies are legally binding contracts and if you just make sure the seller has a good feedback rateing you should be fine

Travel Girl-I have one tip on backpacks, it sounds like you got tons of good tips already though! I find military packs suck as a female. I used one a few summers ago-and didn't test it out first. It was hell! Not at all comfy. My husband has a really nice pack that I love (I ended up wearing his, he wore mine LOL) I'll have to go dig it out and give you the brand. I am 5'4" and it worked on me.

Alright, I am gonna sound like a tool, but I need some help. Does this backpack have a day pack attached to it. It looks like it, but it doesn't list it in the features. Or is there some other way to find out for sure? Thanks for the help. :D

That looks similar to the pack I got from Eagle Creek. And mine does have a day pack in it.

Cool thanks.. I suppose I could just write them and ask them for sure. I would hate to have to return it after it gets shipped to me.

I just picked up this pack:

http://www.kathmandu.co.nz/kat/fmpfiles/FM...&-find=&-Skip=0

I got the 70Lt model.

That price is New Zealand dollars, and I got it on sale for $264 (US $170). Really happy with it, 3 compartments (with lots of pockets all over the place), detachable day pack and really comfortable.

Kathmandu said to come in (with my pack fully packed) a day before I leave and they will make sure the pack harness system is fitted correctly. Sweet deal if you ask me.

Good thing you go it on sale, cuz those prices on the site seem outrageous. $560 bux for a pack! Does it have gold threading or something?

Remember those prices are NZ dollars. $560 NZ = $480 Canadian.

Yeah but that's still expensive too. I just can't justify spending that much. I got mine for $160 and i thought that was a lot!

You guys are so high tech! :D

I should take a picture of my tiny, worn out old pack that I use when I go away for a week or more. I have a bigger, newer, nicer one, but it is almost like it is TOO big. I like being able to carry all my stuff with me on the plane. Since I travel standby, I'll never know if I am really getting on for sure...

I think smaller is better. I use a small North face. It's has two large sacks and one smaller sack. I can hold a few pairs of UFO pant, 3 Tee shirts, Laptop, 6 Socks, small soap and shampoo+Conditioner, Toothbrush, lipbalm, 2 disposable razors, and what ever small stuff I need.

The most high-tech, expensive, cool-guy pack i ever owned is a Dana Design Bomb Pack from a few years ago. It had it all, thick pads, a lil hydration pocket for a water bladder, large extendable hood.

Felt decent... at first.

Then two weeks into a month+ trip I realized it was killing my back. The hip straps were useless, no matter how tight I strapped them it always slid down on me (too MUCH padding, didn't grip my hips) and the shoulder straps were too tight around the neck, making the sternum strap pointless.

Remember, more padding can be a real hinderance. Looking cool means less than little, everyones back is shaped different, spare nothing short of comfort.

^ actually, it sounds to me like you either had the wrong size pack, or didn't have the straps set properly. I have a very simular Dana Pack and I had to buy an XL size pack and a medium waiste belt so it would fit- and it fits like a glove. All the problems you mention are problems of mis-sozing and/or improper strap adjustment... "shoulder straps were too tight around the neck, making the sternum strap pointless" - Dana added an extra set of adjustments to make this IMPOSSIBLE unles you aren't wearing it right. THis is why Dana is the pack choice for expeditions (by %)

/end rant
