Hey, I'm about to go to Europe, back packing for the first time (went a couple times when I was younger.) Anyways, I've been looking at different backpacks and I like the North Face MG 55 pack. It seems really comfortable and probably big enough, but I was hoping that someone who owns one or is more experienced could offer some advice on this. Thanks

I think that pack look great, nice, stylish, comfortable and the size of 4000 cu in should be enough space....but tell me what your going to pay for it????

I had one on ebay that I was going to buy for like $110 used, but got outbid. If I can't find another one cheap, I've found them online for $160 or so. Is that too much? It seemed reasonable compared to the other packs I've looked at, and I know North Face will be a good brand that it won't wear out too easily, but, of course, I really don't know much about them

One suggestion......is this a top loading pack? Personally, I prefer a travel pack that zips down the side so you don't have to empty your pack to get something out of the bottom. Check out some Eagle Creek packs. I bought an Eagle Creek New World Journey for $160. It is normally $275 but it was discontinued and so it was discounted at a lot of on-line stores. It definately pays to shop around. Its just a personal preference but I like travel packs over alpine type packs. Good luck.

Yeah, I had looked at it at a sports store around here, and one of the features that I liked the best was that you could unzip it from the side. I had read on this board that access from the side was something that would come in very handy, so I wanted to make sure the bag had that. I went ahead and bought it last night, got it for $168 with free shipping. Thanks for the other advice

no idea why you guys actually bother with The North Face. TNF makes gear for mountain climbing expeditions. i hardly think backpacking anywhere other than some forsaken peaks in the Himmalayas require such expensive packs. get cheaper packs and use the money to have more fun on your trip. and the less you pack the better - you can easily pack in a 45 lites pack. no use taking a 75 liter one, you'd only carry more un-needed crap.

I got a 95 leter pack but Im out here for a year and I only used about half maybe a bit more of however I like the options a bigger pack gives you if I get into the core mountains of asia I wanna have that there. I like packs that open from the top side and bottom it gives you crazy options and makes life easy, size I find depends on how long your gone for and how hardcore you are basicly the longer your gone and the smaller you pack the more core you are, if its your first time there is nothing wrong with haveing a pack in the 75L its pretty standard no worries with that! also be weary of buyin online packs cause you gotta make sure they fit, straps on the back tight over shoulders and hip belt on hip bones etc... good luck brother.

i love my marmot backpack, but whatever you get, get a removable daypack. it's so much easier when you want to take little excursions out and don't want to carry your 50-70 LB pack with.

Whats up everyone? I'm hopefully headed to Europe for 2-3 months next summer after I graduate with some friends. How big of a bag should I get. I saw the recommendations of side zips and removable day packs but how big should I go with the pack?

Hey there....new to the boards, but I have been reading them for a while...

Well I am headed on my first backpacking adventure this spring on a 5 week trip. My confusion comes with pack sizes. As a die hard canuck, I understand the concept of litres, but become lost when product descriptions use cubic inches. If anyone can give me a ball park as to how many litres 4000/5000 cubic inches (those seem to be the sizes I keep coming across) relates to in litres that would be great!
