and yet another backpack vs. luggage question

My friend and I are going to be in Europe for about a month in May/June. The first week we are staying in a hotel in Scotland, but from there we are going London, Germany, Amsterdam, Italy, France, Spain for only a few days at a time...but we do have our hostels reserved. When I told my friend i was probably gonna take a backpack she looked at me like I was from Mars...am I totally off here, or would a rolling suitcase be fine to take?? I have never stayed in hostels, only hotels, and never been to so many places in so short a time, so this is all relatively new to me...

It depends on what you're going to be doing. Personally, I wouldn't bring a rolling suitcase. They're useless on cobblestone and they're a bitch to drag around on & off buses, subways/metros, etc. On the other hand, if you're going to be frequently renting a car it wouldn't be that bad. I like the freedom of having my hands free and I never rent cars, so I prefer a backpack. good luck!!

Wheeling around a little suitcase for a month would be the pits!!! I have a suitecase on wheels and they're great! But for going to Europe and staying in hostels I'm going to have to say to go with a backpack!
