Thumbs up

Ok quick question -

What do we (as a message board) think of those pants made of hemp? I know they're more organic and hippy-tastic and all but are they actually good for backpacking?

P.S. I already bought a pair and had them tailored and all so I hope they are the single greatest thing ever to hit the backpacking world and that you pros think everyone should own a pair etc...

Smoke 'em if you got 'em...

In all seriousness, hemp's stronger and more durable than cotton - so it's tougher than a pair of jeans, but softer, to boot. Unfortunately, it's about as moisture-wicking as cotton or linen, which is to say that it's not very. So it's good for comfort if you're not dealing with heat/humidity/heavy activity. Personally, as much as I like natural fibres, etc., I prefer synthetics for backpacking - or wool blends. I'll even wear wool socks in 100º weather because they'll ironically keep my feet cool and dry in the long run.
