So I'm not even off on my Europe adventure yet, but have some plans as to where to go next-- Australia/New Zealand.

The Europe trip is kind of a no-brainer-- I got a priceline ticket for 174, so no big deal. It seems, when I look at Australia tickets, however, that I am looking at a much, much, MUCH more expensive ticket.

So this question goes out to the TP viewing audience. What's the cheapest way to get to Australia, from somewhere in the US? What work opportunities are available to US citizens, and how would YOU endeavour to extend your trip? Cheap airfare? What would be a realistic bid on Priceline? Should I start swimming?

Thanks!

swimming....pfft...nah it's all in the arms baby. Get a cheap canoe that should do ya the trick. sorry i can't help ya. i'm on my way to oz and i'm trying to get a cheap tix too. so me first! ;)

hey can u tell me about priceline. Is that the one where u bid on a flight. Is it legit?

Sijuki 11-04-2003 10:01 PM

Yeah you pick how much you are willing to pay for a flight, and yeah its legit. They charge you like $100 in service fees and taxes though, so that can be a bit pricey, but you can still get a good deal, from what I have been told. -_-

You know, you would think as a group we could get our hands in on a commuter jet, like a shared lease plan. I don't remember how much those cost. Sorry, after midnight I get crazy ideas. That's how I found this site. :D

iamlindoro- WELCOME TO THE BOARDS!

One of our members, Katdawg, you landed in OZ (from California) and may be able to give you a better idea on the cost of this air fare and if she got a good deal or not.

I would recommend that you find an STA Travel close to you. Call or go in there and inquire on the price. They have cheaper prices because they cater to students. YOu will have to buy an ISIC card to take advantage of the rates. It's like $25 bucks, but you have to be in school right now. Okay, actually they say that you have to be in school, but just tell them that you don't have any student ID on you, then they'll issue one to you anyway. Fill out the application there and just put the name of any school  ! thats what I did 2 yrs in a row!haha...
Anyway, I believe that you'll find their rates to be very reasonable and priced below market.

Travelpunk private jet.....hmmmmm...I like it, bro  !

Note about Priceline: They will charge you a bunch of fee's on top on your bid. They say that all sales are final and non-refundable, but they actually give everyone ONE cancellation, if you call them and ask for it. I did this first hand! They cancelled my purchase and refunded me. The customer service person told me that everyone gets ONE freebie like that, but they don't advertise it B) .

Ladies first, of course.

The Priceline deal is this-- You make a bid on a flight in a range of days, and give them your credit card number, with the understanding that if they manage to secure that bid for you, you will be immediately charged for it. My bid for New York -> Paris and then back five months later was 174, which was accepted, but $73.56 in taxes was assessed on top of that. All the same, that's a damn good deal as far as I'm concerned, and gives me lots of time in between to explore the delicate art of international relations. ;)

It would probably be my choice in going to OZ since I am not about to pay $1500 for an Australia ticket. My advice is: bid low. If it's not accepted, but you're close, Priceline comes back with something like, "If you'd like to increase you bid to $XXX, we can get you this flight. Then you know exactly what you're getting, and what the minimum you can spend is!

hmm interesting. i'm still a chicken though. I don't trust people or things (like the internet) easily. So i'm always looking for the scam. i'm such a city girl ;)

But oneday i'll try it mabye for a shorter flight. iamlindoro- yeah $1500 in US dollars is too much for a return flight to aus. That's how much it should be in canadian dollars, so you can prob get it for at least 500 bux less. check the newspapers because certain airlines will have seatsales. that's what my friend just did. Booked a flight thru cathay pacific and got a sweet ass deal.

Aww, c'mon, how can you NOT trust a site whose theme song was once sung by William Shatner?

I was, of course, exaggerating on the $1500 thing, but when I got Europe for 174, anything more will seem expensive. :)

This six month trip to Europe is taking me about six months to save for, so an equally long trip to OZ would take me quite a bit longer, it seems. Ah well, everyone needs goals.

I'm planning on going there in Oct/Nov of 2004 and I'm also looking for the cheapest way possible. I'm buying a motorcycle there and I plan on going to New Zealand and hopefully India if I can afford it. I'm in no hurry. I was wondering if I could get a job on a boat going there. Even washing dishes would be great for a free or really cheap trip. Does anyone know more about this? It's been a year since I read about working on a ship to get somewhere and I can't remember the info.

Oh yeah, I should say I need a one way trip because I don't know when I'm coming back to the US. It depends on how much money I have saved up in the next 6 months.

unfortunatly ever since United dumped NZ the south pacific airlines have grabbed the US market with an attitude. Ive used this company several times with no probs, you may want to check with Air Tahiti as well. Good luck with your searches! ;)

airtahiti

I flew to Auckland on Air Tahiti once for like 800.00 bucks RT USD and then bought a cheap ticket to Sydney from Auckland. It saved a buck or two (no pun intended)
