Travelling in New Zealand

Im off to New Zealand in september for 1 year and dont really know where to start. Can anyone give me any suggestions and the sorts of prices Ill be paying for accomadation, food and of course BEER .

If your heading down south best off to start in christchurch and go from there. Its about 2.5hrs to the skiing, and its easy to get trains or buses down to Queenstown from.(round 6-7 hrs by bus)
If theres a few of you cars are resonably cheap drive it maybe? North Islands pretty good to, personally the south has more to do.
