Hey all, heading to Oz soon with my working holiday visa.
Was wondering on the best way to transfer funds from my canadian account, into an Aus. account, once I get one set up over there.
I was thinking of bringing traveller's cheques, but was warned their might be a significant fee. Any other reccomendations? Wiring the funds? thanks in advance,
steve

I assume you cant set up the account before so... ;)
Does your home account allow you to pay bills electronically?
if so i would suggest transfering over the internet (check that u have the right address and a secure connection and you will be fine.) B)
Talk to your bank, tell them your problem and see what they suggest.
I would go against the travelers cheques theyre not really worth the hassle. :nono:
Another option is if you give someone in your family access to your account then u can send the accound number and BSB (branch number) home to them and they can go into the bank and do it over the teller (thats what I did for my brother) - just make sure the bank will let them make transfers and that they wont run off with you hard earned money.

Good luck
zyl

I don't know about wiring money at all. I am still using my canadian account and all the money that I make in australia is going into my australian account. Withdrawing from my canadian account (bank of montreal) costs $5, but I always make sure that I withdrawl at least $200. I would take some traveller cheques, just for safety etc.. The best brand to get is Thomas cook/travelex. The have at least one branch in every majore centre. If you got to their branch then you won't be charged a service fee. If u have any other q's just ask. I'm in brisbane right now.

oh and remember you have to open a bank account within the first 6 weeks of your arrival.

Actually that sounds good, $5 is'nt too bad when withdrawing large sum's of money, i'll probobly take some of those Thomas Cook chq's with me also as a precaution. I just read your online journal, sound's like your having a great time, I can't wait to get out there now, i'm starting off in Cairns on the 29th of July. Maybe i'll see you around, thanks for the info!
