I worked in Melbourne for a few months. I worked under the table. I found the job posted on my hostels bulletin board. I called and got work the next day. It was looong hours..16 hours days. I think i was making about $13 an hour. I worked at the convention centre for a big discount sale that travels around australia. Not sure if they still do it. But hostel boards are fairly handy or you can ask around at cafes and see if they will hire you. If you get stuck I'm sure you can fruit pick in the farming region around melbourne. BTW Greenhouse backpackers in melbourne is a sweet hostel. I cleaned hostel rooms there for free accomodation. Work 3 hours of work to save $26! Have fun.
