for your information about vegemite - this product tastes vile to first timers - my understanding from a report i once read that it is made from a by product of brewers yeast and contains about 20% salt by volume - and subsequently very cheap to manufacture - i happen to like it very much - this is because my mother fed it to me as a toddler - yes it was actually beleived to be a health food!! - and perhaps because of its base it is mildly addictive - on cold winters nights i used to mix a drink of vegemite and hot water and actually add more salt which was very nice -- today i have high blood pressure !!

Yesterday for the third day running, a tourist drowned on one of Queensland's beaches. This unfortune 41 y.o., apparently a good swimmer, arrived in oz the previous day only to drown on an unpatrolled section of a Sunshine Coast beach(Marcus Beach). Every year a dozen or more tourists drown in a similar fashion. Queenslands beaches are unpredictable and many are potentially very dangerous at all times. They contain gutters, rips, strong currents and undertows. What might seem like an inviting section of water may well contain one or more of the forementioned death traps. How tragic it is that so many tourists come here for the holiday of a lifetime to return home in a coffin. All beaches carry warning signs in several languages telling people only to swim on patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags. The beaches here are very beautiful and as safe as any in the designated areas. Many thousands of tourists have a great time surfing here all year round. Sadly some choose to ignore good advice and pay the ultimate penalty. Be warned.

Hopefully your message will help save travelers from tragic accidents, as the one that you shared with us.
Warning signs are posted for the wellfare of everyone.

Last I checked, no one in the last 2,000 years has been able to walk on water. That being said, unless you have an "S" on your chest, you travelers need to read and obey all "WARNING" signs, especially when traveling to foreign countries.

Vegemite ain't that bad, main prob is that it's too salty. I think its health benefit is in all the B-vitamins it contains.

I had an Aussie roommate my freshmen year of college, she ate vegemite on buttered toast... I think it tastes like the dried soy-sauce crustys (on the top of the bottle) mixed with wet dirt. She also used to DRINK gravey!! (Is this a normal Aussie behavior?

ooooohhhhh, I just found this board and feel the need to defend myself and fellow Aussies, sure we may have some unusual habbits but all in all we are great people. And vegemight is awesome. I also drink it as a tea in winter time, helps keep colds and flu away!

Okay I actually happened to try vegemite for the first time last night. I went to a co-workers house to watch a movie and shes from aus. and here on a working holiday visa. Well let's just say ugh ugh ugh. It's disgusting. Really I don't even think its an acquired taste. How can you acquire a taste for that!?!?!?!

But that's just my 2 cents B)

hmmm now i'm really curious! i don't know i think it would be like anything else. Most kids hate hate hate brocolli and asparagus, but i was raised on it and loved it as a kid. I still do! Just different tastes, I guess. And Aussies are great people! They probably think some of the stuff we do is weird! lol

here is a tip for travellers to aus who wanna try vegemite for free...

go to macdonalds in the morning for breakfast (before 10:30am)
they will have a basket of little packeted things like sugar, strawberry jam, peanut butter, and they will have vegemite too..
grab yourself some little packets and get some bread...
put butter on it, and only a little tiny amount of vegemite...

you could probably stash some in your backpack and bring it back home and give them out as souvenirs

in fact, i'm putting them in a carepackage for when my boyfriend goes overseas so he'll always have something to put on bread for breakfast. (thank you macdonalds!) :P
