hey, me and my friend are coming to australia in beginning to mid january and ive been doing lots of reading on the internet trying to figure out what i want to get out of this trip. ive been reading some posts, specifically one that summed up at the major cities, and it came down to what do you want? So, what me and my friend are into basically is punk stuff. like going to shows, riding bikes, squatting, camping, dumpstering, flea markets, busking, farmers markets, anarchism, veganism. pubs, DIY and rad kids(were only 18) and so...are there any areas that are politically and musically radical, or is it basically all the cities have there own undergrounds to look for?

thanks!

Firstly, Welcome Aboard.

Where in Aus are you planning to go?

In any city there are going to be the kind of stores and clubs etc. that your looking for. You can always go to these alternative stores and ask around. (In Melbourne: next, bang, dv8 are some alternative clubs)

I've never been but I'd check out Byron Bay for a bit of counter culture action, Or perhaps plan your trip to take in a music festival somewhere while your travelling. Splendour in the grass is a music festival in Byron Bay with camping. May be hard to get tickets though. from there you might be able to check out Nimbin, a small town full of hippies etc. Look it up on wikipedia or something for more info

In general just keep your eyes on the street press papers (there free and you can pick them up anywhere) for gigs that will take your fancy wherever you are.

Good Luck

hey,
there is heaps to do DIY punk sorta stuff.
for shows (local bands): bombshellzine.com or screamingbloodymess.com. pick up street zines. in sydney go to resist records in newtown, paint it black in newtown (newtown is where you want to go, as well as glebe). in melb go to missing link records in the city. fitzroy in melb is where you want to check out. the valley (fortitude valley) in brisbane. wollongong (an hour south of sydney) also has a huge DIY scene there.

flea markets: glebe markets and bondi in sydney, the valley in brisbane.

veganism - fitzroy in melb have a place called vegetarian orgasm. like i said, newtown is wher eyou want to be for that in sydney

pubs: too many to name!

DIY - check out those two websites for everything.

rad kids(were only 18): just sign up to those sites and they'll help you out.

politically and musically radical areas - newtown definately.

any other info you need, IM me.

as a "punk" already Travelling in australia (im currently in Brisbane on a hostels wireless connection .........yup i brought my laptop with me) ive found it quite difficult finding shows etc to go to..................there are alot of cover bands of green day U2 and the chili's etc playing particularily in big cities like Sydney.

although i was only there briefly Melbourne seems to have a good scene you should definitely hit up a joint called the Espy (esplanade Hotel) saw a great band there called Guitar Wolf (japanese punx kinda like the ramones) and a few weeks later the anti nowhere league were playing in Melbourne.

As for Sydney places often have album launches a friend of mine went to one for NOFX's latest album (he got a free copy for exposing his pecker on stage) but these arent gigs and the band arent present (only one i saw happening whilst i was there was for my chemical romance..............like fuck was i going to go to that)

BMX seems pretty damn popular if thats what your into particularily in outback farmer towns where the kids ride BMX when they cant be out motocrossing

Have fun when ya get out here dude get shitfaced and stuff and if ya find any good fucking gigs let me know!!!!!
