What to do in Fiji?

Ok Folks. It is still a ways off but I am trying to plan/budget ahead. I will have roughly 1 week in Fiji. I am looking for sites and activities (the cheaper, the better) to do while I am there. I am aware of the typical beach stuff (diving, surfing, etc) but was wondering if anybody did anything else?

Fire away!

Foo

Hey foo,

I was in Fiji for three weeks. Activity wise I didn't really do 'that' much. I went on a few hikes but that's bout it! I went all around the main island. then I went to the island of Ovalau (town called levuka). Then i went to this wicked island called Caqelai. It is pretty remote. There were a few bures on the island. It's run by the methodist church from a neighbouring island. There were only five other guests there. It was so great. Much more like a family atmosphere. Everynight we would sit around and sing songs and drink kava. Such a great fiji experience. The island is so small that you can walk around it in 20 mins. Anyways the island is very basic but it makes you appreciate the beauty of fiji and is certainly off the 'backpacker trail'.

I also went to a few of the Yasawas Islands. There is a boat that does this everyday. It's very popular with backpackers so thats where most of them all. It was aight, but I truly appreciated seeing the other side of fiji. Copy and paste the links and you can read about caqelai.

Have fun and don't worry kava aint as bad as everyone makes it out to be!

I did pretty much nothing in Fiji. We were on the main island for a week, and it rained pretty much the whole time. We did take a trip into Suva, the capital, one day, which was pretty cool, there's not much to do there, but it's funny seeing all the hustle bustle compared to the relaxed manner of everyone outside of the cities.

Fiji feels like Australia in the 80's but with alot more afro's and guys wearing skirts. :p

Id visit the islands for sure.

There is also a lonely planet guide with some good stuff in it too.

I returned from a semester exchange in Fiji in December. Being there for 5 months, I obtained a pretty good feel for the place. The most enjoyable places that are easily accessible are:

Sigatoka Sand dunes => only about 40 minutes from Nadi airport. Beautiful beach there. Theres a backpacker spot there called Club Masa. Very cool people running it.

Nananu-i-Ra=> A small island off the north side of Viti Levu. Check out the private back beach. Good party atmosphere

Both are on the leeward side of the island so you shouldn't have to worry about rain ruining your fun

Thats probably the best 2 places to go if you're in a squeeze for time. If you have a little longer stop by Kadavu and Taveuni. They're my favorite islands
