Thumbs up

So I have made a decision... I am moving to Melbourne, Australia next summer after I get my degree in tourism and I need some serious help...(not to even mention that I am moving there with a boyfriend, even a little more scary)

I've already started on the job hunt and have a couple of connections growing so that better not be an issue but I need to know, really, what do you think about the city? I've heard it's great, fantastic in fact but I am a little nervous. I hear it is a bit cold and I will be moving from sunny Florida, already a big step.

So if you guys have any insider info or if anyone is from there PLEASE help. Also, I am apartment hunting so I know how much to budget but I need to know a good area to live. I like the low key drinking scene, more alternative areas, and in general, somewhere to keep my sanity

Thanks guys, the info on the internet just sucks ass.

rent out dvds of The Secret Life Of Us. Its a tv show set in melbourne, it'll get you excited about moving there. I've only been there once myself and i'm a sydney devotee so i cant really help you much more. good shopping though

the weather in melbourne is terrible. ill be honest.it is. its really cold in winter, and really hot in summer. but it is a great city and well worth the effort. besides the gold coast is only a few hours away if you need some decent weather!!

sorry, dont know much else about the place

only a few hours away? I'm used to travelling long distances but the gold coast is more than what i would consider a few hours away from melbourne!

Hey

I'm from Melbourne

I think mermaidnz is exaggerating the weather a little bit (no offence )

It doesn't get too hot in summer, definetly not as hot as Brisbane and the Gold Coast does at the same time of year. I'm not familiar with Floridian weather patterns but I don't think the winter will shock you too much (there is no snow for example)

I've never rented a house in the city so I'm not sure of the costs of the various areas and such, Essendon is cool and close to the city, probably a bit pricey though. Friends of mine study in the city and they live on the 16th floor of a very flash apartment building right near the casino/south bank which is surprisingly affordable. At the moment they are sharing a 3 bedroom apartment with a total of 5 people and it only costs them $60 a week each!

I don't think any areas in Melbourne are more alternative than others however there are plenty of cool alt. clubs in the city, and if you live in Footscray, Carlton, Essendon etc. you will still be very close.

If you have any specific questions feel free to ask, I assure you the responses will be much more coherent as I don't work well with open ended questions.

I know that you will love Melbourne

hmmm im sure on the news a few summers back, melbourne was just as hot as the gold coast- like 30+ degrees? maybe it was just a heat wave?
and everytime i have been to melbourne (marchish) it was been cruddy and cold and rainy... just thought it was always like that :P heh

melbourne is 3 hours away from the gold coast by plane. about $115aud each way

^id rather spend alot longer on the plane and go to Perth then the Gold coast..

you have nothin to worried about remember melourne was voted the most liveable city twice a couple years ago and id be more releived then worried, could be worse ya could be movin to sydney.. the weather isnt that bad can be shit and can be good, likes to leave ya guessin, compared to europes winters its quite mild..
and they just finished alot of redevelopment & cleanin the city up because of the recent commonwealth games that were on.. so its better then it ever was..
as to where to live.. footscray was once been the shit hole of melbourne but its pickin up priddy fast there and not as bad as the old days.. i think raoulduke knows more about the housin shit then me
anyway in short ya got nothin to worry about melbournes cool
