They really ought to name this place Shitty Backpackers... Oh wait, that's what everyone calls it anyway.

It bills itself as a smaller hostel, and I guess on the Brisbane scale of things it is, but only because it's got narrower, tighter hallways, smaller bathrooms, and a small bar... It sure didn't feel like a smaller, cozier place.

From the rude front desk staff (who obviously didn't like working/staying there) to the rude bar staff to the generally rude guests there, City was pretty Shitty all around. It's a shame, considering it's got pretty nice, airconditioned rooms, as well as a lovely pool deck overlooking the city and the Brisbane river. But that's where the niceties end and you notice all the corner-cutting everywhere. They offer ensuite bathrooms, but the bathrooms are pretty worthless and you wind up using the public ones anyway. The bunk beds are some sort of discounted furniture warehouse ones that don't have ladders nor climbable ends - they look pretty, and then you realize they're nearly impossible to climb up on. The onsite bar closes too early, but you're kind of stuck there because - despite the relative proximity of the Roma Street Transit Centre - there's nothing else nearby. They bill it as some crazy place to party, and even have t-shirts (it's called the Fiddler's Elbow) but I don't see why anyone would hang out there unless they're simply too lazy to walk into town.

Recommendation: Skip it. The only draw here is that it's walking distance from the Roma Street bus/train station, but there are 3 others nearby as well: YHA, Cloud9, and Tinbilly's. Try one of those if you need quick access in/out of the station.
