Thailand??
i was initially planning a one month trip to eastern europe this summer with a rough budget of £800, im coming from the UK so the flights are cheap. My mate im travelling with has suggested thailand now instead. The cheapest flight i can find is for about 500ish (june-july time). Is it viable to survive out there on £300, a little bit more if needed for a approx a month. I also haven't done much research yet on thailand, so can anyone tell me where to go etc. Im looking for lively places, bars etc some of the time as i am 19, however i dont wanna be anywhere too commerical for long periods
cheers
Mike

I've never been to Thailand so can't really comment on the costs of things there, but between having £300 spending money and going to Thailand, and having £700 spending money and going to Eastern Europe, I reckon you'd have a much better time in the latter. That way you won't spend the whole trip worried about running out of money.

thats what i was thinking, but looking into it Thailand is seriously cheap, like hostels from 1.5 a night, although cheap none of the eastern european places touch anywhere near that. You visited some of the countries i might be going to if i go to E-europe instead. What was your average daily budget in places like Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria etc and would you advise these as destinaitons

Well, Croatia is the most expensive because it's very touristy on the coast, in the hotspots like Dubrovnik at the peak of summer costs are similar to those in Western Europe, although things get a lot cheaper when you go east. Bulgaria was very cheap when I was there, that was before they joined the EU though so I'm not sure what it's like now. I was buying pints of beer for about 50p in a bars, £1 in nightclubs, and accomodation was about £6-7 a night. Serbia has some really good nightlife and is also very cheap. Bosnia was surprisingly expensive, but less than Croatia and I doubt you'd be doing much drinking there anyway which is what seems to take up most of the budget.
I'd say on average £15 a day should be enough if you don't include alcohol, but obviously more in some places and less in others.

I've spent one month in Laos-Vietnam-Thailand on a $15/day budget, with one or two meals a day not in restauant. With your budget you'll be fine, but you may have to do your daily accounting to make sure you're not going over. Especially if you plan on doing diving and paying activities.
Summer is the rain season, I guess it's the low season for tourists, you probably won't have problems finding beds in budget hostels.

You mentioned it'l be the rainy season, does this mean there are just more storms etc or is it prolonged periods of constent rain, i.e. weeks/days of continous rain. The only climate that i've experienced that may be remotely similar is Florida's, i went during the 'rainy season' and despite late afternoon storms, the weather was generally good and sunny!!

I left Asia just as the rainy season began, so this info comes from what I've heard and read. My understanding is that the weather is unpredictible during this time. Usually, it is as you described or lasting soft rains, but it can also be pouring rains for days. Bring a good pair of boots ! :D
