Default Need some web addresses

Hiya,

I am planning to go around South East Asia and need to know some good websites to get me started. As at the moment, i havent got a clue, but know i need to think about, VISAs, places, travel arrangements, medicine, insurance and most importantly where to go.

When I travelled around Europe i used 'Guide for Europe', however is there any equivelent? Or how to most people begin a trip like this? Do you go to a travel agent?

thanks in advance!

firstly, are you planning to go to particular countries? that would help immensly in getting answers

also, a reasonably good book to flick thru is the lonely planet southeast asia on a showstring...it will answer alot of your questions nodoubt.

also, what kind of visa are you wanting? working? travelling? and where in asia?

If you are American, you can always go to the State Department's website for information about visas to other countries. There is also information on different medicine or vaccinations you might need. http://travel.state.gov/travel/travel_1744.html

And there is always this site right here to help you get answers to some of your more specific questions.

hi,

I am planning to go to the usual places in South East Asia, ie Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia. The visa will just be a normal travelling one for about 6 months.

Thanks for you advice!

I planned my six-month stay in Asia basically with Lonely Planet, worldtravel and travelpunk.com.

Do you mean six months all together or in each country ? US, Canadian and UK citizens need visas for all countries you mentionned except Thailand (1-month travel with no visa required) and Malaysia. You can get 30-day visa at certains border points and airports for Laos ($30) and Cambodia ($20), ports and airports for Indonesia ($25 I believe). I read that you could also get the Vietnamese visa at border points, but I couldn't say more. I bougth mine ahead. This thread will inform give you more about visas.

I think the best thing would be to go to a book store or the library and start reading guide books about your destinations. That will give you a good starting point about everything.

I agree with Jeanie...guidebooks are essential if the primary reason you're going is to SEE something. If you're the type of traveler who just likes to hang out and catch the vibe of a place, they're perhaps not quite as essential. Typcially, I read several guidebooks before I go someplace. Good, realistic ones like Lonely Planet, Rough Guide and Let's Go (and increasingly, Footprint) will tell you most of what you want to know. Fodors is a great one to read strictly for the sightseeing tips. Their suggestions on places to stay and such are typically directed at a more well heeled crowd, i.e., not backpackers.

Most guidebooks also have a summary at the beginning: The 10 things not to miss or highlights of a country, etc. Hit the library, check them out, and see what appeals to you...
