I would recommend the Furama Riverfront. Just based on the name I thought it might be near Clarke Quay...I checked and it is - walking distance so they say. Clark Quay is a nice area full of bars, clubs and restaurants, all right on the river with the skyline of the city just across the river. Definately a good spot.

If you would rather be near shopping, see if any of the hotels are on or near Orchard road - that is where all the shopping is. Enjoy!!

I stayed at the Hotel Royal some years back, it was not terribly convenient - probably a 5 minute walk to the metro, but mostly along the main motorway, and with no sidewalks, it was rather dangerous (and wet), particularly on rainy nights. The room was small but adequate for me and our two young daughters (they were 2 and 4 at the time), and the restaurant was a kick for them, as they had "tuk-tuk" booths which the kids enjoyed, but the breakfast was not stellar. There was a bus stop immediately out front, but it wasn't a convenient way for me to get around. Staff was friendly, though.
